My friend adds it to porridge (well mollasses, but it's the same isn't it?)
.
So is molasses just the american word for treacle? The potato bread recipe includes molasses but i was going to use treacle...but when i looked in the cupboard we didn't have any so I used malt extract instead (it worked ok!)
re the no knead bread - mine doesn't rise much either, but it tastes so good and fortunately for me DH doesn't mind. Even DD9, who moans about anything other than white plastic bread, has eaten the odd slice so it must taste good. Although the slices are much smaller than shop bought bread it's much more filling so I still only need a couple of slices at a time.
We ran out of time to bake yesterday. Our trip to Mr T's was far more time consuming than I had planned (not to mention cash consuming! but I did get the girls some clothes and bits and bobs for the holidays). So I must must must do some baking today! I'm planning zarazara's stuffing mix bake for dinner too.
Before I forget - Growingafamily - many congrats on the safe arrival of baby Rosie! :jweaving through the chaos...0 -

Now we are getting into the season where those of you who grow your own stuff are starting to get cheap veg (sighs deeply at regret of having to give up own allotment at start of year due to move...) this is a good recipe combining excess veg and bread with fresh basil- I use my BM to make the dough for me
Stromboli
Take veggies such as courgettes, peppers, tomatoes, onions, garlic, aubergines, mushrooms, etc and cut into chunks - you need about enough to fill a large roasting tin in a single layer
Toss the veggies in a little oil and roast in a hot oven until soft.
Make a basic bread dough from 1 lb flour, 1 sachet yeast, 4 fl oz oil, 10 fl oz warm water 1 tsp sugar and 1/4 tsp salt. Either use a bread maker with a dough setting or mix all the ingredients together to make a dough and leave to double in size in a warm place.
Knead the dough until smooth.
Take a large baking tin. Put some oil in the tin to stop the dough sticking and then with oiled hands spread the dough out to a single layer.
Pile the veggies onto the dough (leave a 2 cm around the edge free) and top with fresh basil leaves. Fold the dough over and press the edges to seal all the veggies in.
Brush the top with a little oil and sprinkle with sea salt if liked.
Bake in a hot oven (Gas 6) for about 40 minutes - it should be risen and brown and sound "hollow" when you tap the top (mine always spreads sideways too hence using a tin not a sheet).
Serve in hunks hot or cold
Cheap and v tasty if you have your own veggies and herbs....the roasted veggies also keep for a day or so in the fridge so I cook them when the oven is on for something else to save the fuel.
Sounds lovely and will def try - I just wanted to add for info that Stromboli is the name of a volcano, off the coast of Italy as I recall... loads of people still live there - the island is literally a volcano  It'e beautiful at night as you can see the lava. Prob why the dough is hollow & then filled with veggies xMFW #185

Weezl - it's all your fault
I've just spent time creating a spreadsheet working out what some of my meals cost per head  I'm turning even more geeky (I already work in IT).
Anyway, the chilli that is currently stewing away in my slowcooker costs me approx 54p a portion - but I usually buy wraps to eat with itThat makes it about 71p a portion!!
So today I will have HM tortillas (as per MrsM's recipe) and OH will have to put up with the smaller HM onesworking on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -

Blame the working in IT for the being 'geeky' -- I'm currently in IT as well, and I'm a spreadsheet addict :rotfl:
Yeah but I've worked in IT for 8 years now and only just started costing all my meals!!
On another note - watching the Good Life the other night - they used nettles to dye wool green. They also made nettle soup with some extra nettles but they didn't like itWas thinking of this thread while I was watching it all

I've been in IT since September 1985 -- so almost 23 years now !!! Scarey to think about
(Unlikely to be by the end of the year though, due to major job cuts and lack of anything else in that line of work around us)
Probably explains my addiction -- but I'm sure you'll catch up with me :rotfl:Cheryl0
