I am getting really interested in the origin of Finnish language. There are so many connections to India (like poo is the same word!! and I can pronounce Indian names if I just use the Finnish way of pronouncing) and now the connection to Japanese. How exciting!
Still haven't had my supper as been searching that match. I found it! Thanks to a great tip in the MB thread. Shall clear my inbox now and then log off. (Have been promising to call DD's Dad but conveniently been putting him off or "forgetting" to call - too late now for todayHe refuses to talk to me during the day and I refuse to talk to him in the evenings - what a pair - now you know why my DD is so hard headed)
I'll try again: night night!

Good evening Frunchkins:D
It's been a busy day on this new thread today 70+ posts already:j
Hope you all got to enjoy some sunshine today. i had a potter in garden after work, have picked lots of strawberries, blackcurrants, more gooseberries, raspberries and a bit more rhubarb. The tomatoes in the hanging baskets are going mad there are hundreds in each basket and the ones in the greenhouse are coming along nicely. The runner beans have also gone mad- have put more net up for them. Peppers and cucumbers looking okay but my courgettes are looking a bit poorly. I think I will give up on the courgettes:rolleyes:. Carrots, spuds, onions, leeks are doing okay.
The blackberries are a mixture of flowers and green berries but looks like being a bumper crop:D.
Think I will freeze some of fruit and do some baking at the weekend, except the strawbs as they are irresistible:p
Decided that Hugh Furry Whatchamacallit can live without my £35 so won't be signing up to river cottage, but have picked up a few tips from the river cottage forum I found;) Are you still behind the sofa Draig?:rotfl:
I am just about to settle down with my John Seymour book and some gardening books and try and decide what to get started in my part allotment in time for winter.I will post some "before" pictures when I finally get down there. Guy wants to move some stuff out of way first, then he is going to lend me his rotavator to turn it over. I can't wait to be able to grow stuff on a larger scale:D Should definately help with the food costs:T :T
Day one of challenge part 3 and managed a no spend day.0 -
Spent a bit more than I meant to todayI decided to get my brother the student's and frugaller's essential of a thermos mug to bring coffee to lectures in since he's a caffeine addict like me :rotfl: along with a couple of other bits and nice wrapping paper etc. I then met some friends from school to catch up with them before I leave and we ordered a carafe of wine because my friend assured us it was cheap - in fact it was £17.75  but at least that was split between 3. Anyway, the upshot of all that (plus a mobile bill) is that I have £83.32 for the whole of September before I go back to uni. That's about £20 a week which should be fine considering that I will be living at home BUT the one big variable is travel; if I end up getting a job in London then I can go everywhere on my work travel season ticket but if not then train fares will probably eat into that amount very quickly. Still, it's not lost yet
And more to the point - we're leaving tomorrow!!! I'm not sure if I'm moreor ! However, we've prepared pretty thoroughly (though I'm sure I'll be frantic tomorrow) so it should be OK... I have this fear that there will be something wrong with our tickets and we'll turn up at Gatwick tomorrow then have to go straight back home again
If we manage to get past that stage then it should all be OK! It will be great to see somewhere totally different to the environment I know - Jamiedodger, we're going to SE Asia and will hopefully be travelling through Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, in that order, but the beauty of the trip is that we have 9 weeks and no commitments so we can do whatever we want
It will be lovely to share so much time and so many new experiences with OH as well, can't wait :happyhear.
I had a similar experience to you, wendywitch - hope you manage to pay in your small change in dribs and drabs! My dad, bless him, wanted to help out a bit for the trip so he got me some USD to spend in Cambodia, which was really sweet of him; trouble is, I've read that anything above a 5 or 10 dollar bill is viewed with suspicion and he only got $50 and $100 notes... so I tried to change them but apparently that would be against money laundering regulations  and otherwise I would be charged two lots of commission/bad exchange rates for going into sterling and back again. Argh! Guess I will just bring it with me and hope for the best and if not change it on my return. It's the thought that counts anyway
I wanted to say another big thank you to everyone on this thread for giving me the motivation to stick to the challenge, save all my extra cash, and make this trip possible :T I'm hoping it will be the summer of a lifetime (so far) and I could never have afforded it without you guys. I'll try and post a few times over the next couple of months but OH doesn't know I post here and I'm not sure I wanna tell him right now sooo it might be tricky. In the meantime, hugs to all who need them, especially Janey, and good luck for the third quarter of the challenge
:j

Andromanche have a great time! My DD is going to an open day at Cambridge on Friday  shame you won't be there. She went to oxford last week and didn't really like it! Favourites at the moment are Bristol and Manchester.
Just heard on the radio that the Roundtree Foundation say £13,000 a year is sufficient for a single person to afford an acceptable lifestyle. This includes accommodation costs, and 'essentials' like DVD player, TV, mobile phone (and if only you're retired - a bird feeder in the garden:D), the 'occasional' glass of wine, but a car and cigarettes are considered to be luxuries. Must see if we can find more details.

Mumzy....great holiday on offer, but somehow I don't think OH will let me go.:D
I'm just about to take DS to school. He has a trip to Alton Towers. Isn't it marverlous how they can get out of bed straight away when they are doing something exciting. It never happens when it's just a school day!
I'll post later to let you know about our Frugal Run last night at Mr. M's, you will not believe how much it cost us.:DLiving a frugal retirement without treading on the planet :T

Good Morning all
Today i have to go to connections and pick up some info on college courses in my area.. as i really don't know what to do in september.. i can go to work or college but im so unsure.
I have nothing planned apart from that but that could all change when i start asking everyone in my phone book what they are up to today :rotfl: I went to get a brew this morning and realised i have 1 tea bag and no coffee left, so i need to get tea bags today (coffee can wait till 9th when my mum does my online order as coffee i refuse to pay as i dont drink it much unlike my mother and step dad :rotfl: )
I dont know what to have for tea..i may make a cheese and onion pie but i really should use up what i have in the freezer.
