  • I too was with Avanti from when they took over from Shell. When I lef,t my monthly direct debit was at £142/month £1700/year for an annual usage of 2500L @ £0.46ppl. Effectively, I was paying in advance as the refund almost covered the fill up from Woldlink.

    I had tried to leave the contract early, which on paper is straightforward but in reality not so simple. I was told that they would require their tank to be removed from site, at my expense, and the next supplier could then install theirs. Not so easy or cost effective when its a 2000L underground tank.

    Best days work I ever did was switching to Woldlink. Thanks to this thread I've been paying less than 50% of Avanti's price for over a year. Ironically my gas is now delivered by Flogas who were even worse than Avanti. A strange world is LPG!

    There seems to be no way to breach a 2 year contract, as Essexuser says, no new supplier can/will take over the tank before the 2 years is up. The new supplier has to buy the tank from the current supplier and that is effectively impossible while a 2 year contract is in force. Again, we customers are 'over a barrel'.
    You forget, though, that there IS another option.

    YOU buy and own the tank, and have it filled by whoever, since there's no contract. Think of it as analogous to owning an oil tank. The difference is, of course, that there are legal requirements to have a gas tank periodically checked and certified, since it's under pressure. That's included in your rental.
  • Hi. I had the same problem and went to ukplg org to find suppliers in my area;

    I have just finished a 2 year lock in with Calor who invited me to stay with them for a £25 credit and 41p per litre. I have just signed a 2 year contract with Flogas who offered gas at less that 30p per litre for 1 year and the second year capped at no more than a 3.5p price rise so still miles better than Calor. In addition to that I am getting a £250 credit to my account! Much better than Calor's £25!! They are also taking over the tank rental which will be monitored for refills as before. We have a 4 bed house with 2 occupants.

    I don't know what area you live in but definately worth finding out who can supply you via uklpg org Hope this helps and good luck!

    Prices we (the users) get charged are based on bulk prices (i.e. Platts and ANSI - Argus North Sea Index) plus suppliers' costs PLUS whatever they (the suppliers) can get away with. People know that - but in the current absence of HateLPG's useful monthly charts I've been trying to find the current ANSI price. All behind paywalls.

    BUT I did find the chart for propane* in pounds sterling per gallon (US? Imperial?) for Texas for the last 20 years. You can get the charts with time ranges for 6 months (explains Woldlink's increase of 0.4p?) to 20 years. Propane is down to the prices last seen in 2003/4.

    The propane versus Brent crude plot is interesting too - especially if you're haggling and your prospective/actual supplier says LPG prices bear no relation to crude!

    Do remember that we know** that when Woldlink sells you LPG at 20ppl they are making 6ppl profit - so Flogas is selling the stuff to them at 14ppl. The current Lister ANSI Tracker price is 30.3ppl.

    Last HateLPG chart - for March - is here.

    *LPG is mostly propane
    **because someone let slip this info.

  • Hope somebody can help.I've just signed up with flogas.Flogas have just rung me to say that CALOR have only sent 3 cp certificates and they say their should be 5 and cannot buy the tank.I rang calor and they say flogas are wrong and they have sent all the paperwork they have.It now seems that another cp test has to be done which will take up tp 6 weeks.Calor also offered we a better price when I spoke to them about the cp certificates. Is this a case for the omudsman?
    Thanks

    No. The test will just get done, if copies of the paperwork can't be found.

    And there's really nobody you can blame for buyer's remorse because you later got offered a better price.
