Can I just say that one of the reasons I think that the thread is so long and it's so difficult to keep up is that some people are not staying on post and seem to combine the gc stuff with other non gc stuff. I know I am sometimes among them and I know that when you have problems to solve it is great to unload here and get everyone's support, but I don't think this is really the place to discuss favourite tv programmes and film stars etc! Sorry if that sounds boring and/or critical - but there are other threads where you can chat to your hearts content. It seems to me that some people have been put off from contributing to this thread since it became more chatty as there are several I have not seen posting for some time. Sorry if I have offended any one - I don't mean to be mean. quote]
understand what you mean, but on the same note,if we all stuck purely to talk of food and budgets it would be a less interesting thread, the camerarderie and fun would be taken out of it,i personally enjoy reading all the posts cause it gives an insight into other peoples lives and feel its an important part of this thread, and maybe if people dont like all the non topic posts then they could just skip past them,as angelnikki has put all the recipes on the front page so its easy to find them and thats what most people come on here for in the first place.but i do see your point,i just guess i prefer the thread with all the added banter, wouldn't do for us all to be the same though would it.:Dfamily is me,oh,16yDS,10DD,9DS&17month old DS,2dogs,3cats,4bunnies,5 ex battery hens&5fish.GC challenge-/£300:pspends already this month-animal food-£28,mr T shop-£119.plus local shop spends total spent £257,:j0 -
Hi all
Just been catching up on all the posts, took ages as I have been too busy hosp visiting to post. On the plus side I went to the flour mill & got loads of flour - I then asked about a sack of onions as i bought one there before. the nice old gent said they were sprouting, so NFS - then gave me 2 sacks FOC!! Only prob is I now have 2 sacks of onions, the sprouting ones he said use as spring onions & the others are OK to use as normal. I know I need to use them up quickly tho - any ideas anyone - can I freeze them or something? How do I prep if so?? TIA if you can help (DH moaned all the way back - 3 hour drive - about the smell!!)
Any onion ideas peeps please????

Zoe I put the Recipe Index on the first page because people were struggling to find recipes and needing to have them reposted. This was taking up a lot of space on the thread and people were struggling to get on and keep up with the thread. It was supposed to be a way to reduce the size of the thread.
I did not do the recipe index as a way/excuse for people to post off topic
The people that want to stay on topic should be able to read and keep up with the thread, they shouldnt have to only look at the index. This thread is to help people with their grocery challenge. If people want to gossip there is a daily thread and there is also the money savers arms & the nightowl thread
Sashanut I chop and freeze onions in a freezer bag. Then just add to the pan straight from the freezer as needed. Some people tray freeze and then transfer to a container/bag after they've frozen to stop them sticking together, but I dont bother with that and just bash the bag on the counter to break a bit off

The curry queens, curry base recipe takes quite a few onions, and it is gorgeous, well worth doubling/trebling the recipe and freezing in portions. Onion soup is yummy. Onion relish.

Onion Bhaji's, onion rings (if you like them), baked onions (you stuff them with savoury stuffing and bake them in the oven), onion marmalade (for serving with savoury stuff) or caramalised onion chutney? I make soup and there's a 3 cheese and onion tart that is rather yummy in Sophie Grigson's 'Herbs' book.
There's a whole pile of onion recipes on this website, must be something that takes your fancy? Although I'm not sure about the onion porridge  http://recipes.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Category:Onion_RecipesNSD Challenge 2010:Jul 12/12; Jun 21/14 :T; May : 6/6

angelnikki wrote: »OrkneyStar Your posts are fine cos they are related to the GC but the posts above yours obviously aren't as this isn't a hunk/TV discussion thread.
You can have as many lines of text as you want but it has to be at least vaguely relevant to the grocery challenge pleaseIf you're posting about your GC spends and want to mention how your family/friends are then that is fine cos you were gonna post anyway, but just posting a pic is not on (IMO) and filling the thread with stuff that is not useful to others doing this challenge.
We are not short of space necessarily but most people are short of time and cant spend all day every day going through all the posts to find the ones that are relevant/useful to them.
Also this is a free forum but someone still needs to pay for the bandwidth so please be considerate of what Martin :money: has given us and use it appropriately.
Posts with pics of hunks are not on topic and are stopping people getting on who need to reduce their shopping. Not everyone has broadband/ everyday access to the internet and those people really struggle to keep up.

As I posted the pic of Mark, I want to apologise as I know it is not on topic and do understand that people downloading who are on dial up find it difficult and obviously more expensive as they have to stay on longer, so accept the point made.
Moniker, you did not offend me and you were just making a valid point, which we are all entitled to, you included.
If posting just general chat is stopping people coming on here, then we do need to look at it and should get back on track, but I must agree, the occasional venting and talking about friends & family IS part of this challenge, as these are often things that take us off track from the GC, and the people on here are so nice and encouraging that getting their support is one of the things that keeps me going - I know when I was unwell a few weeks ago I would have lived on takeaways and junk food if it wasn't for the support I received.
My Hubby is encouraging and supportive of me, but I know a lot of other people have opposite situations, so being able to get together as a 'cyber family' is great, I know of no-one on here who is intentionally nasty and I really hope it stays that way.
Anyway, back on topic - NSD for me today - have been busy working and staying away from the shops...:TLBM April 2013 - £29,000.00Vanquis CC's PAID - Debenhams SC PAID - A+L OD PAID - Asda CC £783.75Barclaycard CC £1400.78 - BoS CC PAID - Freemans Cat PAIDF/D Loan & CC £1458.96 - Santander Loan PAID - Mum Loan PAIDRBS OD PAID - F/D OD £1026.52Weekly Grocery Challenge - £95.00 budget / spend £-0 -
