Tip, (new puppy) is booked in for her jabs today. Got to bake a birfday cake for DS2 and finish the prep off for tomorrow. Got a gammon in the slow cooker for tea. Back has eased a little but still painful.

Took the pup for her jabs and she piddled all over the table, bless her. At least she wasn't sick in the car. Managed to make a cake, need to ice it tonight. I was a tad bit annoyed last night as I'd put a huge ham to cook in the slow cooker. Left OH in charge and he used it all up, I was hoping to get 3 meals out of it! I did think whats the point of me trying to save money and he doesn't give a fig.
I have a bit of a dilemma on my hands. I want to join a gym, the time has come. Hurting my back has shown me the extra blubber I'm lugging round isn't helping me. Anyways, there is a gym near to work, about 10 mins away if that, but its a self programming one and you have to make up the exercise routine yourself, 3 months £220. The other gym is 15 mins away, includes a fitness instructor and any classes they do are also included (yoga, pilates etc) they also have a power plate and this costs £510 per year. OH thinks I should go for the nearest one as I'd be more inclined to go. I fancy the other one as I'd have support. Having thought about it over night, my possible solution would be to join the closer one for 3 months (minimum membership) as its approaching bad weather time and then consider the other one in the new year. It'll also show how often I get to go. Any thoughts peeps?

Go for the one with support and more classes is my vote.
220 to me is a lot for 3 months with no support.

Lucielle I would tell them about your back and tell them you want to see if you cope with the exercise routine 1st so could you 'pay as you go' for a couple of months before joining?0

I'd definitely go for the one with the instructors as having a bad back you need the help as if you do the wrong exercise you may damage yourself0

I think instructors and a power plate sound better than just self programming. £220 is ever such a lot just for 3 months... Can you have a few days free pass to test it out before buying... That would be better still I would thinkAchieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

Lucielle, your husband is right but not if they don't provide any support. Keeping to exercise needs support from a personal trainer (and a good one at that) because you cannot know at what intesity to work out (e.g. what exercise and for how long to do). Our natural inclination is to minimise pain and suffering so it is likely that you will go through the motions of exercise but not really work hard enough to have any effect. The opposite to that is that you could overdo it once or twice, get hurt and then give up.
Classes are also useful - most of the time we need to get into exercise by doing physical activity we enjoy; with me it is dancing.
Hope this helps you make your choice

As I am a lazy sod the other gym would probably be better, but would still cost more because of the fuel consumption. Day off today, so going to the cash and carry, banking, paying bills and enrolling on a course.
Getting ready for the weekend from hell (DS2s party). Back is easing a bit having discovered nurofen and nytol, means I'm not waking up wimpering whilst trying to roll over.

Another one voting for the gym with support and classes - and if you are going for longer than the 3 months, then it is more cost effective too - £220 for 3 months is a huge amount of money - and I would looking for a lot of personal training support for that amount, if it were me.
Yes, the other one will use a bit more fuel, but over the course of the year it will be offset by the savings from the fees. And the benefit of having that support, being able to constantly tweak your programmes etc to suit your level of pain and fitness is invaluable I reckon.
Plus, the chance to try out new classes, for no extra cost, is a real bonus - you may find something you really love. I have found myself booking into a spinning class next week - it won't cost me anything extra, but I quite fancy it and if I don't like it, I don't need to do it again!
The classes may also have something that actually suits your back - for example perhaps the spinning wouldn't put pressure on (obv I don't know what the problem is with your back, so only an example). My DD has a back injury from a ski accident that has been a problem for 3 years now, and she is seeing the consultant about it.....but she loves Zumba - she says that none of the moves put pressure on that particular part of the back, until it comes to the cool down back stretches at the end.....which she can avoid.Successful women can still have their feet on the ground.
