Where do previous payments on account appear on current year tax return?
I'm keying in figures into my 25/26 personal tax return having made 1 payment on account for that tax year already and another due in July. In the main self assessment (right up to the calculation and "submit" button), I don't see either of those 2 payments on account featuring anywhere, and instead the balancing payment…

Do I need a newer "GOV.UK One Login" login if I want to update my income estimate?
Good morning all. I've had a government gateway login for a few years now. This current tax year is the first new tax year since I retired in September last year where I won't be working (obviously!). HMRC are still estimating that I'll be earning £31,922 this tax year, presumably based on what I earned last year, despite…

2024 to 2025 tax on interest...2025-2026 over taxed
I dropped into the 40% band in 2024 to 2025 (final late March bonus which was more than expected) and ended up with a bill of around £330 for tax on interest. I had notification that my tax code would be adjusted late in the year (2025-2026) and for 2026 - 2027 to recover this. In the meantime, for 2025 - 2026 I am…

Self assessment idiots guide wanted
Out of the blue, I have received an HMRC letter stating I need to complete a tax return and they gave set up a self assessment record and created my Unique Tax payers reference shown in the letter. I assume due to savings. No details were included apart from mentioning downloading an app, or scan the QR code. I'm now very…

HMRC over estimate of untaxed interest
I’ve just received notification of a change in tax code for the current year, due to their estimate of untaxed interest. There is also a small amount of tax to pay from the previous tax year. My issue is that their estimate is way over the interest earned this year (mainly due to me using my ISA allowance and a reduction…

Salary sacrifice vs deduction at source - query
Hello all, new here so hello to you all I have a question that I have been struggling with for some time, having moved company 18 months ago and gone from salary sacrifice to paying into my pension after PAYE has been deducted. I have always read that making payments into a pension after tax is broadly the same for tax…

How to prepare for MTD ITSA from April 2026?
Hi everyone, I’ve been reading about Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD ITSA) starting from April 2026, and I’m a bit confused about how to prepare for it. Do we need to submit quarterly updates manually, or is there software that makes the process easier? Also, what’s the best way to track income and expenses to stay…

Appeal against inclusion in MTD?
I have a feeling this might be wishful thinking but….HMRC have roped me into MTD because a one off payment last year kicked me over the MTD threshold for property income. My property income has been way below the threshold for the last 10 years and will be again this tax year. I'm not self employed. It looks like I'll have…

Health insurance and HMRC

Tax bands when adjusted net income above £125,140
Hi, a relative has for the first time (simultaneously) exceeded adjusted net income levels of both £100,000 and £125,140 and we just keyed in the relevant figures into a self assessment to get a calculation of tax liability (to start early with saving up for the liability due next January), and to my surprise, the HMRC tax…

How do changes to personal allowance affect my higher rate threshold?
I just read (on a reddit thread) that changes to an individual's personal allowance will change their higher rate threshold by the same amount. I can't see this on gov.uk or money helper - they only say that the personal allowance is "up to £12570" and the higher rate threshold is £50270 (rather than saying personal…

Choosing to pay over the annual allowance
Curious how common this is. Example scenario: 200k earner pays 150k into SIPP. Tax relief is payed back through SA. Without tax relief there is a 40% plus entry penalty as well as the eventual 40% plus on withdrawal. However while inside the SIPP there is no CGT (24%) or DT (36%). 2 CGT events offset the tax entry penalty.…

Product in exchange for charity donation
Hi I entered a mini competition whereby I received an object in return for a set donation and that money was paid directly to the person's chosen charity (a well known one). For self assessment purposes as a sole trader, does that still count as a charity donation? Thanks
