What to do with 40k in the short term
Hi All, I've saved hard recently and now have £40k in savings, but no other assets (except £42k in a SIP pension scheme). The reason I've been saving so hard is to buy a flat, however in the part of London I'm keen to buy in that would only constitute a 10% deposit on a 2 bed place, so I'm mulling over hanging fire until I…

Nationwide pulled bond rate despite inviting us to roll over
I'm really hacked off with Nationwide. We had a bond maturing with them on Dec 17th & they invited us to roll it over. We responded in the affirmative yet they've now contacted us saving the rate has been reduced. I think this is sharp practice. I could perhaps understand them pulling the rate for new applicants, but to do…

Advice for investing in local company
I work for a local limited company and have been there for nearly 3 years. There is 4 directors/shareholders, all of whom I know very well having worked with them before in previous employment years ago. Child Saving A/c with internet access (to view balance)?
I want to open a pocket money savings account for my kids (they will get half in cash and half in the account each week). They are only 8 and 6 so it will be initially operated by me in their name. However one thing I am keen is for them to have internet access to see the balance so they can check how their savings are…

Merry Christmas to all you savers and investors
As the title says - hope you all have a magical Xmas, and an even more magical New Year (take note, Mark Carney ) I'd like to say a big fat Thank You to so many people on here who have contributed - sometimes controversial - ideas and suggestions, many of which were new, and very helpful, to myself.

Free sites to track stock portfolio
Any recommendations for sites to track ones stock portfolio. Yahoo and Google finance lack the ability to plot progress of portfolio on a graph, and also don't allow for day on day comparison against major indexes. WikiInvest seems to be quite a solid platform, however it's portfolio feature don't support UK currency. :(

regular savings?
Hi, I'm going to let out a house which will bring me in £650 monthly, gross. I want to have this amount paid in to a separate account with the idea of getting interest on it. I hope to keep the savings, untouched, for at least five years. Most regular savings accounts seem to have upper limits which are below the £650…

100 day challenge
I officially have 100 days left to save to my target of 4k by 1st April 2013! My end goal for saving is for house deposit but I like to set myself mini targets and my current one is 4k by April! It wasn't until I went to work out how much I needed per day that I realised it was exactly what 100 days left. Next year I am…

Hi, I have around £180,000 to save/invest with an £84k mortgage to pay off in 12 years' time. (Currently paying interest only at 0.87 interest only, set at .3 above base rate.) I have 2 children aiming for university in 4 years' time. I am a basic rate tax payer. £84k has come from life assurance payouts following the…

Overpaying mortgage vs saving
Hi all, I'm interested in opinions on a sensible ratio of saving to overpaying on my mortgage. I'm currently in my mid 20s and earn £33k with good future job prospects. I have savings around £15k, of which around £10k is potentially available for overpaying my mortgage (£6.4k 3.1% ISA, £3.6k 3% 123 current account). The…

Childrens Savings for twins!
My husband and i are expecting twins in June. We would like to start putting money away for the future, university, weddings, house deposits, whatever they want to do. FTSE tracker that pays dividends?
With savings rates so low, I recognise that I have to take some risk to get a reasonable return. I am not very knowledgable on stocks/bonds etc and do not want to pay hefty fees to advisers etc for my reasonably modest investment. Therfore, I see a passive FTSE tracker or something similar as a possible solution. If I were…

Resolution shares
Saw this tipped as a good dividend share, but on looking at historic charts the share price seemed to tumble in 2010 from over £25 per share to just over £2. I have been Googling but can 't find out why:mad: Does anyone have these shares or know what happened to cause such a drop? I am still thinking about Vodafone, but…
