Free sites to track stock portfolio

Any recommendations for sites to track ones stock portfolio. Yahoo and Google finance lack the ability to plot progress of portfolio on a graph, and also don't allow for day on day comparison against major indexes. WikiInvest seems to be quite a solid platform, however it's portfolio feature don't support UK currency. :(

Morningstar have a free portfolio tool with the feature you describe.

I use ADVFN for portfolios which are just shares or ITs or ETFs, and Trustnet for the ones that are mostly funds.

Neither do the job in as much detail as I want. ADVFN will give me a graph of total portfolio value over a period, but the graph doesn't show what's growth rather than my new cash being added in.

Trustnet, if I had 100 shares in ABC Corp last February and bought another 100 ABC in July, and reinvested half the ABC dividends in 5 new shares in October - there is no way it is going to be able to show me a graph of my portfolio growing how it actually grew, or how many £ of total dividends within my portfolio that I received during the year actually came from ABC.

It can tell me how a holding of 205 ABC shares grew over a month or year or 5, not that I had them all for that long. Or how Vanguard Lifestrategy compared to HSBC FTSE 100 or a range of benchmarks over 1 year or 6 months (although I might have only had one of them for 8 months and I can't rebase the graph to that point.

I end up using excel to track stuff which can be as flexible as you like but you need patience to import everything and if you want to track your IRR and multiples for everything you'll need to know how to build some decent formulae.

The easiest one to track portfolio performance with is Morningstar which also allows you track against a variety of benchmarks. http://www.morningstar.co.uk/uk/default.aspx?lang=en-GB

I also like Trustnet http://www.trustnet.com for its portfolio tools and ease of use. In fact this is the one that I predominantly use now.

A third option is the LSE which also gives you portfolio alerts and news on your holdings etc http://www.londonstockexchange.com/prices-and-markets/stocks/tools-and-services/portfolio/portfolio.htm
  • I use shareprice.co.uk, also they have free a free app for android or Apple.
  • I heard thats not free realtime data any more

Morningstar is ok but limit 100 symbols on the free version. I doubt any of them are perfect without paying

I get 5% profit shown on something I bought at 150 and sold for 450, the reason being at some point I bought a big amount and sold it at only 5% higher which swamped the longer term performance.

Also morning wont reflect dividend income, that is a massive part of a stock or fund performance, I enter it as zero cost shares so I see it as capital gain

Not a site as such but there is a free version of Microsoft Money that allows you to setup a portfolio and track prices along with various investment reports.

There is a link to download it here

    http://photo3-tech.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/microsoft-money-stock-prices-updates.html

There was a problem with fund price updates but the version now available has resolved that at present.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • There are many options if your portfolio is very simple. But long term analysis of portfolio performance is a problem if you trade different asset classes or have long/short positions as well as trade foreign stocks and want to see detailed statistics of your portfolio. Google finance is the best I have seen. Beatthebenchmark.net very good as well. I think that there is even more analysis available than in google.
