Where can I learn about financial markets and investment banking?
Hi all I would like to learn about the financial markets and more about investment banking. My ultimate goal would be to have a go at buying stocks and shares. Can anyone point me in the right direction. I'm a novice but willing to learn. Some easy to read articles would be a good starting point. Thank you in advance!

6 year Protected Equity Bond
Hi, am new to this but am hoping that someone may be able to help me. Back in 2009, I invested £20,000 on the advice of a Financial Advisor at Nationwide in a 6 year Protected Equity Bond (with Legal & General). My circumstances have now changed drastically and I am in a lot of financial difficulty and would really like to…

Share Query
I have some shares in a cruise company that allows me to have on board credits when I book a cruise, and so far it has worked well. My share certificate is held by Hargreaves Lansdown and there's no problem there. But the cruise company now always want to see a very recent statement (or the share certificate) to ensure I…

Saving for university fees - long term
Hi all So with the fees now uncapped for university, my husband and I are preparing ourselves to at least part fund our son through university if that's what he wants. We're lucky - he's two, so we have a while to prepare. Does anyone have a view on the best way to do this? We currently save £50p/m in a high interest…

CGT and the 30 day rule? RDSA & RDSB
Ok I want to crystallise some gains this tax year, to utilise my CGT allowance. I am aware the HMRC rule is that I cant buy the sold shares back within 30 days, or I'm deemed not to have made the sale. So could I sell my Royal Dutch Shell 'A' shares and immediately buy RDSB and still have been deemed to have made the gain…

no decent returns anywhere fed up :(
Just fancied a moan really, I've been whizzing around on the web trying in vain to find a decent return on potential savings pot and its absolute cr*p! The banks are tying us up in knots it appears by reeling us in with 3% here and there with clauses such as 'buy an investment product to the value blah blah blah..' or rate…

How do I make the best of a good situation?
Hello everyone, This is my first ever post on any forum so please forgive me if I don't get it quite right. Essentially I am after some advice*, I could come up with an answer myself but I know that there is a huge amount of experience on this forum (I read it quite often and I am a huge fan of MSE) and I would like to use…

Good Afternoon, I need some help. I am in the fortunate position where I am working abroad and earning a decent wage. I have managed to pay off the debts which were making my life a misery back home. I now want to start saving, I have 25,000 at the moment, I will have approx 1000 a week to invest, I don't want to tie the…

Best use for company surplus funds?
Hello, I am self employed via a limited company of which I am the director. Over the last ten years I have built up a surplus in the company account as a buffer against any future time when work is scarce. I now find inflation and low interest rates threatening the real value of that buffer. I am debt free apart from my…

Stroud and Swindon Regular Saver Issue 2
Has anybody clarified the situation regarding the bonus on this account? The rate payable is 4.5% which includes a 2% conditional bonus . I have now entered my second year but cannot convince myself or otherwise whether the bonus for the 2nd year is only payable on 2nd years payments, in which case leaving the £3000 in…

C&G Fixed ISA Interest
My Mum took out a 4% 2 year Fixed Rate Cash ISA from Cheltenham & Gloucester in Feb 10, depositing £5,000. A statement arrived last week, showing that £160 had been credited on the anniversary of the account. Surely 4% interest would give £200, not £160? The account is an ISA, so no tax deduction. We had some similar…

'Private' off shore Banking
Ok, so where is the safest and most discreet place on Earth to store money? Switzerland seems not so private any more. Singapore perhaps? Has to be safe and secure - so that rules out for example Panama I guess. Any thoughts? This has nothing to do with money laundering but a lot to do with an ex wife shall we say.

Selling foreign shares IRS/CRA/AT tax?
Does anyone know when a UK taxpayer sells foreign shares, in particular shares in US, Spanish and Canadian companies, do you have to inform or submit any forms to the foreign equivalent of the HMRC regarding the sale or capital gain or loss? Also is there any foreign tax to pay to IRS/CRA/AT? In addition, is there anywhere…

Investments instead of a pension - anyone worked it out yet?
Hi, First post, so hello all :) I've reached the ripe old age of 41 (nearly 42) and have had a lot of jobs in the technology sector. As such, I've ended up with 4 pensions that are collectively worth... not much! At 42, it seems pointless to try and build up a good pension now, so am considering a sort of 'blended' savings…
