About to inherit £10k. Where do we put it...
We are about to inherit £10k and are not sure where to place it. We are not intending to save it long term as we are doing some renovation work in the house and will require access to some of it, but it would be nice to get a little bit of interest. What would be the best place to save it? Many thanks moneysavers

Children savings accounts for non UK resident child
I live in England, but have a God Child aged 2 who was born and lives in South Africa. I would like to set up some sort of savings account / trust fund for her in the UK as I am not sure about investing for her in South Africa. I am looking to put away about £20 per month. The aim would then be to allow her access to the…

Inflation figures not good news for some NS&I savers.
Whilst Consumer price inflation dropped sharply in December from 4.1% to 3.1%, less well reported was the headline Retail Prices Index (RPI) which fell to 0.9% from November's 3% rate, the biggest fall in 28 years. This is what the National savings index linked saving certificates use as a benchmark, so some of these could…

Hargreaves Lansdown Vantage ISA - Reclaim Bond Income?
Hi all - my question for today is: I have a Hargreaves Lansdown Vantage ISA. If I buy a bond fund, how do I get back the 20% deducted from the interest? Their Guide to ISA's say "The tax paid on the income from gilts and corporate bonds, or funds which invest at least 60% in gilts and corporate bonds, can also be…

Are you new to shares but want to buy banks?
If so, please just send me your cash instead. Every day I'll roll a dice, and if it's a 5 or 6 I'll add 1% to your pot of money. If it's less than 5, I get to keep 2% of your money. Sound like a good deal? No? Didn't think so. There has been a whole flood of "I want to buy bank shares" posts in the last day or so, and most…

Multiple NS&I Guaranteed Growth Bonds
Looks like I will settle on the NS&I Guaranteed Growth Bonds, I wanted to save for about 9 months, and this is the best paying 1 year with minimum penalities if I withdraw before maturity (90 days). Long story short, I want to make deposits from 2 seperate debit cards, you can only add to one bond once the paperwork comes…

ITV1 savings makeover, or did you fix savings at 7% plus?
The ITV1 Tonight programme is looking for people to take part in a savings special. It will involve filming within the next week or two. There are two categories: Did you fix at over 7% a few months ago? The day base rates first dropped by 1.5% in October there was still an opportunity to fix at over 7%. Did you take that…

Share Buying,brokers & DRIP
I like to buy shares now and again and also like to have new shares instead of dividends. The broker I use at the moment doesn't allow this - maybe none of them do. After thinking about it I realised that to be able to have new shares I would need to have certificates and the buying of the shares would therefore be more…

Printing Money - What Does This Mean?
There have been several mentions here and in the press about the Govenment printing money. This is seen as bad for the saver and the average person in the street but no-one actually explains why and how you avoid/offset the effects. Can someone explain and settle the nerves of those mentioning this in their posts but not…

Funds in other currencies, tracking other countries' markets
Hi All, I'm quite interested at the moment in sticking my money into funds tracking foreign markets; essentially, some relatively safe tracker type funds that (in the event of continued sterling collapse) will hedge me against that sterling drop. The overseas tracker type funds I find, though, tend to indicate that their…

Anyone work / understand how the FSA work?
Not sure this is the correct forum to post this, but being as there has been so much about RBS, possibly might generate a reaction or two. I was listening to J Vine at lunchtime and they were talking about if direct action should be taken against Sir Fred "The Shred" Goodwin, as he oversaw the demise of the RBS, and the…
