Savings: What is my best option?
I would like to start saving £50 a month for my son for when he goes to college. Where would be the best place to put my money to ensure maximum investment without risk. We don't think that we'll be touching the money for at least 10 years but I don't wan't to be swapping accounts every year or so.

Halifax Managed Income - how bad?
I have had 170k in this fund for nearly a year and have been checking up on it’s performance following dire warnings on this board. I totally take on board comments about never trusting banks etc, and I will be diversifying out of this at some point. However in a reply to another query on the subject, Chrismaths said ‘Have…

Protected FTSE Plan and Guaranteed Equity bonds - are they same thing?
I have a letter from an IFA suggesting investment in a Barclays 5 year FTSE Plan. It offers 120% of the rise (if any) in the FTSE 100 index. However there is 3% commission payable. I notice National Savings and Investments offer a very similar product called Guaranteed Equity Bond (GEB). It also offers 120% rise (if any)…

Can I ask about shares?
I have done a search of this forum and can't find the answer so i hope someone will be able to point me in the right direction. I have got 50 shares in the Abbey (now Santander) which I want to sell. It's such a small amount that I may as well get rid of them. But how to sell? It's such a small amount so I don't want to…

First Direct - ESaver
Hi, The interest on an e-saver is paid on the 1st as we know there is a penalty on withdrawls. If I withdraw the entire balance I take it I won't get charged as I can't lose any interest as there is no money to gain interest on. Have I missed something or is that how it would work Thanks

Query ref fund performance percentages
I am confused by the percentage returns given for funds from sites like Hargreaves Lansdown and Trustnet. For example, I have held Aberdeen Emerging Markets for exactly one year, and per my portfolio summary at Hargreaves Lansdown I have had a 7.54% return. Yet when I look at the fund performance chart for AEM, it says the…

As of October 1st 2007 I will have a lot of cash to manage over a period of 4 years, as I am leaving corporate life to do a PhD. I'm selling my house (which is in a different city I don't intend to return to) and getting out of my mortgage, which (fingers crossed) should net me about £40k after fees and moving costs. Other…

Rebalancing 'for dummies'
Hi - I'm the dummy, trying to get my head around the idea of rebalancing. Lets suppose I'm looking to invest £10K this year in OEICS's, and my risk profile is 5 out of 10. I therefore go and buy £1K in ten different OEICS, one each in the risk grade from 1/10 to 10/10 . OEIC1 - £1000 risk grade 1 - Cash under the matress…
