Probably a stupid question about making bread....
Sorry if this is daft, I'm not a natural cook & am working really hard to get better in the kitchen, but I admit I am lacking in lots of basic knowledge :( I've been making basic bread by hand using the free leaflet, I think it was with the Mail a while back, taken from the book How To Make Bread by Emmanuel Hadjiandreou…

Singer sewing machine from lidl- help!
I've just bought a Singer sewing machine from Lidl. There is an empty bobbin inside the bobbin case and it is determined to stay put. I've tried everything and it won't budge. I think it may have to go back to the shop before I've even tried to sew with it but can anyone suggest anything I might be doing wrong? I expected…

Average price per portion?
Just wondering what everyone else spends on average per portion of dinner? We eat fairly large portions that I know could be cut down or stretched out with rice or cous cous. For example, we would use a whole 6-7 pack of chicken thighs at dinner between myself, husband and toddler when I know we could manage to stretch the…

Frugal living

I have been on and off researching dumpster diving in the UK but I simply don't have the courage to leave my daughter alone during the night to go out hunt for discarded goodies and I don't have anybody to come with me….so I have ben wondering if it is viable asking in small…

The lesser of the weevils...
Have had a few instances of in-date flour showing signs of infestation...wonder if anyone has noticed which flour brands tend to show early signs of infestation or, conversely, which keeps clear longer. Been buying own brand but wondering whether to go up a level? Since I have run out of both plain and SR and they need to…

Why are my carrots going soft n bendy in no time?
As I live on my own, I buy loose carrots - 3 large or 4 medium at a time as I find a whole bag is too much for me. I may buy the odd bag in the winter for stews and soups. I normally dry them off on a paper towel naturally and put them in my fridge and they last for a week. I bought some last two weeks and they went bendy…

Elbow patches!
Last year, when my son was about to start Senior School, I had to buy him all new school uniform including a blazer. The blazer is woollen with braiding all around the edge, tops of pockets and around the cuffs, and the school badge is embroidered onto the breast pocket. It cost £98 new! But I bought a generous size in…

Cooker lives to see another day!
Back in 2012 I posted for advice on replacing my 24 year old Belling cooker. Advice given by several members was don't, new models they had purchased were nowhere near the quality etc. of my old work horse. I managed to get it going again, albeit minus the top oven, couldn't get door hinges (but the grill worked fine)!…

Does anyone know who offers a good economical way to get: 1. photo prints from old photos 2. photo prints from old 35mm slides I am happy to do via post, but cannot find anyone who does both at a reasonable price! I have about 15 of each to get copied for other family members. Many thanks

Freezing milk - can I do this?
I know I can freeze milk. But can I do the following: I live alone. It's cheaper to buy the bigger bottles of milk than it is the smaller bottles. But I don't use that much milk and have to throw milk away a few times because it's gone off. Can I open the bottle of milk, use what I need (or put it in another bottle) and…
