Singer sewing machine from lidl- help!

I've just bought a Singer sewing machine from Lidl. There is an empty bobbin inside the bobbin case and it is determined to stay put. I've tried everything and it won't budge. I think it may have to go back to the shop before I've even tried to sew with it but can anyone suggest anything I might be doing wrong? I expected it to drop out of the case easily but it won't come out even with gentle persuasion with a screwdriver.

  • My machine is a Jones, admittedly quite old, but can't think that the bobbin case can be that different. On mine, the bobbin case has a little lever on the side which releases the bobbin. It fits closely into the case, so if you are not familiar with these things it would be easy to miss it. What does your instruction book say?

There's nothing in the instruction book at all and I can't see anything on the case itself which looks like it could open the case up - in fact the case looks as if it's in one piece which wouldn't be able to expand. The bobbin looks a really tight fit inside it, almost as if it's too big, but it came with the machine so you would think it should be the right size.

What about checking for a download from Singer website, to see if they have a better instruction manual?

On my machine (Toyota), there's a little metal thing that you pull out to remove the bobbin case, and the reel comes out quite easily then.

I would suggest you contact Customer Services via their website which thankfully now is a cheaper number. They may be able to contact the manufacturer for you or get you some help?

You could try ringing straight through to the Singer helpline, the number should be in your manual and I understand they are extremely helpful,

Thanks all. Had tried singer helpline but closed for the weekend, called lidl customer services and they said to return it and they would exchange it. Second machine is exactly the same, have checked the instruction links (thanks everyone) but alas there's nothing about how to actually get the bobbin out of the case. I assume I must be doing something wrong ( my last machine had a top loading bobbin so didn't have this issue) or else there is a general fault with the machines. Inclined to think it must be me! Thanks for all the suggestions, I'll try the Singer helpline again on Monday. Not looking forward to sewing these curtains by hand in the meantime!

This might not be applicable at all, but is the bobbin case the type that has a spring loaded bar across the centre that you have to pull to get the case out of the machine?

Make sure you try to remove the bobbin with that bar both closed and open. I used to use a bobbin case like that many years ago and it would only work one way, but I can't remember if it was bar closed or bar open.

Apologies if you've already done that or not applicable.

Put your problem on Lidl's Facebook page - other people who have bought the machine may have the answer you need.
