kitchen slicer...how do I clean it?
I've been given a kitchen slicer...the sort with a large circular blade that you turn with a handle, brand name is Comet. It still appears to work well and I know that it would be useful for getting thin slices that I can't do with an electric knife. There are no instructions for cleaning, do you just wipe the blade?…

Snails
Ahem. There are about 30 of them, pulled from the garden, living in a clean dustbin ion the garden, feeding on the lettuce leaves I have been feeding them for a week. Tomorrow they will commence their final 48 hour starvation purge, then on Sunday..... Free food anyone?

You know your an MSE Oldstyler when...
Do we have this thread already, I think I've seen it before....? 1. You only have four transactions showing on your bank statement in the last two weeks and they were all payments in 2. You plan on making brocolli bake (with onion and cheese and mushroom sauce mmm...) at midnight when you get home from work - so that you…

How to do quick washing - any tips?
I would love to know how some people on here get the washing done in their washing machines (I assume!) in 30 mins or less! The one that's in our house only has 3 buttons and 14 settings and I don't know how old it is! I'm assuming it's getting on a bit because of the lack of features. The quickest I've done a load of…

Old Style Outside Lavvy
When I was young we had an awful outside toilet, my dad called it the closet while to everyone else it was "The Lavvy". It was dark, you had to take a candle, and cold and it was my job to clean it. Anyway when I was in the garden yesterday I got to thinking. It would be great to have an outdoor loo. Think of the…

Salt beef
Hi old stylers, I would like to try making my own salt beef, however all the receipes I have found so far call for some saltpetre ( potassium nitrate i think) for the brine. I believe the saltpetre tenderises the meat and helps it retain its colour. I have seen it on the web but a small amount is £8 with postage. I have…

Old Style Diary Archive - JUN 05
Up with the lark, hung out the washing that I'd put on before I went to bed. Had fresh baked bread ready for breakfast using the timer on my bread machine. Cleaned all the mirrors with some vinegar solution and buffed up with newspaper. Our very own new shopping centre opens tomorrow, :j but one of the stores was holding a…

Help needed with Ham
Just finished roasting a ham, which the butcher said did not need soaking, and it is soooooooooo salty. The potatoes done in the roasting tin are almost inedible, but the meat is worse. What can I use the meat up in that can disguise the saltiness? thanks pol

Old Style Book
Just a wee note (and don't get too excited its a long way away). I was discussing with my publisher today an 'Old Style Book'. Not written by me (nor would i claim to have written it) but using the info in this board (i'd hire a journalist to pull it all together). They loved the idea. My thought was all the proceeds (well…

How often should you wash Duvets & Pillows?
Hi, Just how often should you wash Duvets & Pillows, whether this be for hygiene or to get rid of dust mites? Is once a year a good frequency? If so, how long should you wait until throwing them away and buying new ones? Thanks in advance, Shane.

Stupid question about BBQs...
I had planned to build a permanent BBQ in the garden (well I wasn't going to build it in the bathroom.. :p ) but on pricing up all the bits and pieces as well as bricks and delivery, it's coming in at a similar price to a gas barbecue. So....how does food cooked on a gas bbq taste "barbecued"?! Do I have to buy something…

Milk not keeping :(
Milk doesn't seem to be keeping very well for me at the moment - it is turning 2 days before it's printed sell by date, whereas in the past I have always found that it usually can go on a couple of days past. I have turned up my fridge setting in case that is the cause, but has anyone got any bright ideas?

Worth it's weight in gold!
At last I've managed to get hold of a copy of Bernadine Lawrence's book "How To Feed Your Family For £5 A Day" and what a difference it has made. I now actually enjoy cooking whereas before it was a chore. Food bill cut from £40 a week for two of us to a maximum of £20 a week. All the recipes are great and I even bake all…

Any hints for non-toxic daisy removal?
Our lawn is over-run with daisies at the moment, which are spreading like wild fire. As we have cats and dogs around, we couldn't use a toxic weed killing substance. I seem to remember a discussion on vinegar (believe it or not!) killing weeds some time ago. Anyone know if this would work on daisies, or is there anything…
