Ahem. There are about 30 of them, pulled from the garden, living in a clean dustbin ion the garden, feeding on the lettuce leaves I have been feeding them for a week.
Tomorrow they will commence their final 48 hour starvation purge, then on Sunday.....
Free food anyone?

Eeuw!!
I didn't realise our local garden snails were edible / palateable? I thought those french ones were a special breed?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. All snails are edible (in fact anything in a shell, apparently). Palletable? I have yet to find out.
I am assuming that they will taste similar to whelks, which I quite like.0 -

Depends what they've been eating prior to the lettuce. Do you have any deadly Nightshde or Hemlock growing near you? Opium poppies?
I suggest a hunt to find the most unlikey free meal in a shell ........Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

:rotfl: thats as old style as it comes. Have you suggested it to that resturaunt who have had to withdraw squirrels from the menu. Maybe they could sell Pal's garden snails instead :eek:When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt0

Tomorrow I am also planning to ask around local fishing shops to find out if the local rivers have any American Signal Crayfish that I can catch and take home to eat. They are a pest so catching and eating them is not an issue, and they grow to the size of medium-sized lobsters apparently.
Apparently squirrels taste quite good, but you have to shoot them carefully so as not to fill the back legs (where all the meat is) with lead shot.
Lillibet - the snails have been eating only the lettuce that I have been giving them, and will be going hungry for 48 hours before their final journey. I may also give them some fresh rosemary tonight to see if that effects the flavour.
Rosemary flavoured slime. Yum!0 -
I've eaten snails - Paris 1989 - dripping in a garlic butter and lots of scrummy french bread to mop up the juices! D-LISH! Bought some tinned snails to bring home but my friend "borrowed" them for a fancy meal
Bit on the chewy side, but no outstanding flavour as I recall.
We used to go winkle picking as kids and mum would boil them up - tedious picking them out with a pin though!
As for their toxicity ... read this: http://www.hertzmann.com/articles/2004/snails/ has recipes too~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Pal perhaps you'd like to come and fetch the snails from my garden?!
Please do this before you eat your snails. See you one more time then.
Bye Pal! :rotfl:Torgwen.....................

I was only originally going out the garden to help protect my carrot seedlings - put the snails in a bucket and then decided to keep them.
My garden is now snail free outside the bucket, but I somehow think that they will be back.
The many slugs I found were simply dispatched on the spot with a knife, although I note that River Cottage has a few discussion threads about whether slugs are edible.... My next project perhaps?
Bacon and Tarragon sauce sounds great. Seems a waste to put snails in it!0
