Pal wrote:Tomorrow I am also planning to ask around local fishing shops to find out if the local rivers have any American Signal Crayfish that I can catch and take home to eat. I've eaten wild & farmed Crawfish (crayfish by another name) in thier homeland of Lousiana, be sure to add lots of caujan spices & a cream sauce for the traditionl dish or mix with crabmeat for a pie filling.....they really are delicious. I've also seen Hugh Fernley-Wotsit catch & cook them with wild garlic on TV. (But then he cooks road-kill for goodness sake). Be sure not to catch the smaller English variety as these are protected & very rare ( and not at all meaty so bit of a waste of time!).
I still think eating garden snails, luxury-lettuce fed or not, with or without garlic butter, is on par with Judi dyeing her hair with ink:eek:Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

How do you plan to cook them Pal? My OH tried his last night and although he said they smelled nice, they were still extremely slimy and he wasn't impressed. It may be that he'd not cooked them long enough (a few minutes in boiling water, removed from their shells, then cooked in a risotto, added with the rice at the beginning).
I didn't join him in this experiment
Slugs are definitely not edible, they can carry parasites/bacteria/dunno...does nasty things to the brain, possibly causes/carries/makes susceptible to meningitis. Really, don't eat slugs. Your method is a good one, then you can leave the bodies to be disposed of by garden wild life and if you have a pond drop a couple (not more) in there for the tadpoles to feast on.0 -

Alas I forgot to put them on the starvation part of their diet on Friday (they need 48 hours with no food to cleanse themselves), so didn't have time this weekend. I also did some gardening and found about 20 more, so they need to be detoxed for a few days anyway.
I will starting their cleansing on Wednesday so I can eat them on Friday.
I think that the detox and cleansing period is supposed to make them less slimey. You are also supposed to cook them in salt to reduce the slime. I still need to look this part up!
I also found the biggest slug in the world yesterday. It was the size of my hand! If slugs were edible it would have fed a small family.
Pal Junior originally named him "Yuk" but it is now called "Splat".0 -
In Bulgaria, about mid morning, lots of people take their carrier bags to the vast green areas and collect snails!
I asked why and was told "Its free food". Can't say more than that. They cook them by boiling in beer.
I hate animals (except to eat them), but love snails and tortoise's, so wouldn't dream of eating them.........................anything else is fair game though
