American cup measurements?
I'm coming round to the idea of using cups for baking instead of weighing. I'm sure someone posted a conversion table on this board but I can't find it so I've searched on Google and found that although everyone agrees 1 cup of flour = 4oz, there is some debate about what a cup of sugar is. I have a measuring…

Plants for a future is an organisation dedicated to finding sustainable plants for a variety of purposes - including eating, medicine etc. They have a database of 7,000 plants (a huge number when you consider they say that the majority of what we eat comes from just 20 plants!) with details of cultivation and uses.…

Potato Wedges? - All you ever wanted to know about how make potato wedges
Yesterday, hubby and I had a big sort out of the kitchen cupboards (I can't reach the top shelves ;) ). We have decided to use up all the old packets of stuff that we no longer buy as we have converted to Money Saving Old Stye techniques. We found a couple of packets of dried mix to coat potato wedges and used them up last…

Making and adapting clothes
A few weeks ago, my partner said he wanted a long wool scarf in a khaki green (as he's quite tall, regular scarves look silly on him!). We looked around and one of the type he wanted was £15 (in Topman, I believe). "You're not paying that!" I exclaimed, and dragged him to the indoor market. He chose the wool he wanted (a…

vegetables - any uses for the leaves?
Was trimming a cauli today, and there was loads of (stalky) greenery around the white "flesh". I just wondered if this could be made into soup, or any other ideas? Seems a shame to just chuck it (although I did on this occasion).

Breadmaking - recipes, hints, tips, questions
Not sure how to go about this. But would it be possible to start a thread/ recipe index for all us "breadmaker" afficonados (sp) - and there seems to be quite a few of us :D . It just struck me that a lot of us through trial and error have come up with some fantastic breadmaker recipes and tips that would be great to share…

Marg/butter for baking - quality or price?
Just out of curiosity - when you are buying marg/butter for baking, do you go for more expensive and better quality product, or do you buy a cheaper product because it is 'disguised' in the end result? My other half buys whatever better quality marg is on offer - I tend to either buy Pure (because of no animal or…

Which Panasonic Breadmaker? SD???
After reading people raving about their Panasonic breadmakers, I'm tempted to replace my less than satisfactory Schneider one. I've searched and found two models SD252 and SD253 - anybody got any advice? The first is available for about £65.

Stingy or moneysaving?
Heard the other day that a neighbour charges his wife for the vegetables he grows in his own garden. This is true and she pays him! He reckons that he is saving the family money as his veggies are still a lot cheaper than anything his wife could find at the supermarket. I could not believe it at first. What do you…

Small (tiny) slow cooker - how do I use it????
Remember the free La Redoute crockpot? As New MSE'r, I sent for it coz it was a freebie - looked at it in complete bewilderment when it arrived, and stuck it in a cupboard. Well I've been reading the slow cooker recipes and I'd like to have a go. So I've washed it down and set it up.... but it has no instructions and I am…

White vinegar that is, walked into a greengrocer that I kept saying I must look at but am never in the right transport at the right time and it was there under some racking. £1.30 for 5 litres. Also walked out with beansprouts, plum tomatoes, watercress, cooking apples, ordinary apples, asian pears, beetroot, onions, a…
