Help needed with older saey multi fuel burner
Firstly, i'm fairly new to these types of fires. I've also seen a few threads but nothing answers my question directly. My burner has a rectangle door at the bottom (where the ash pan is) and to the left of this door, there is something like a metal stick which pulls out. On the pipe that comes out of the top of the…

Thermal Store with wood burner and combi-boiler
Hi all, I want to install a wood burning cooker with back boiler (about 15kw to water) and use it as the primary source of hot water to feed the central heating. I believe I can install a thermal store with header tank and feed & expansion chambers to cope with this, indirectly linking the existing combi-boiler in through…

Which solid fuel makes least amount of ash
I just installed a 5kw multi fuel stove, and only tried smokeless fuel so far... Homefire ovals, excel, supertherm, blaze and maxibrite. None of which impressed me in terms of ash residue. I tried to find out on google which solid fuel (hardwood, briquettes, hotties, smokeless coal etc...) left the least amount of ash,…

Should I remove the grate from my mulitfuel stove?
I will only be burning wood for the foreseeable future so should I take the grate out to improve efficiency? It would prove a bit fiddly and also I would need to put something else in to stop the logs and ash spilling out when I open the doors. Any thoughts?

Multi Fuel Stove Problems
Evening folks. Wondering if anyone can help me. I had a stove fitted last year by a 'reputable' fitter. It is a small multi fuel stove using the original clay chimney. The fitter put a reducer(?) on to a length of flue so that the 5" stove flue would fit the 9" clay chimney opening. He filled the gaps around this with…

Can anyone recommend a good oil boiler?
Hi our oil boiler has decided to pack up. Just wondered if anyone can recommend a good, reasonably priced replacement.

New oil heating system - what programmer to get?
I've recently moved, and the house currently has more 'potential' than comforts. We've about to install the heating (hopefully before winter sets in properly) and going through the estimates in detail to attempt to get sensible breakdowns and specifications from the installers. The leading contenders have a good reputation…

Ash pan and cleaning mess
I just had my new 5KW stove installed last week - a broseley - and I am a bit disappointed with the mess this whole thing creates. The ash pan is ridiculously small, and needs emptying every 12/14h of fire (for smokeless fuel... I assume it would take less than that if I was to burn wood). I was told that the stove / ashes…

Used Solar Panels
Hi all, I am thinking about replacing my Solar PV panels and replacing them with solar roof tiles. The panels are working well and they are only a couple of years old. Does anyone know how well the panels hold the value and where you would go about trying to sell them? Thanks in advance.

Twin walled flue pipe suppliers
Hi all, I am about to fit two multifuel stoves (one a range cooker, type not decided yet) as cannot face a repeat of last years heating (gas) bills. Our gas bill for March was £488, in the summer months down to about £30. I would be grateful if anyone could point me in the direction of affordable 6" twin walled flue…

Making the heat from a stove to 'flow' through the house?
Any tips on getting the heat upstairs? It's lovely & warm downstairs, can feel it slightly up stairs but wandering if we can get it warmer? It's all open plan, read somewhere about a desk fan at the side of it? Saw another post about them eco fans that go on the fire. Not that fussed if we can't get it warmer, like I say…

What is this "pretty log" thing?
I heard on the radio a bloke was in the doghouse for "burning the pretty logs"? I was a bit bemused by this - you have a woodburner, therefore wood is to burn, surely? OK some of my family enjoy chopping wood in square section, triangular etc but that's just for the fun (or a really flukey chop!) Can anyone explain? Is…

How long do wood burners last?
Hi thinking of installing wood burner (contura) in next few months. Was wondering what is life span of these wood burners or wood burners in general? Also life time of flue?

Multi fuel stoves and hearths
Has anyone any experience with Eco Ideal multifuel stoves please? We like the look of them but can't find any reviews. We've also been trying to find if we can actually get a stove fitted. We have reinstated the 'hole' in the chimney breast which seems to be big enough for a stove with enough clearance. There is a concrete…

Heat Loss Calculation
I'm looking at moving away from our oil boiler and getting a pellet boiler and take advantage of the RHI. Now, I realise that for any such alternative boiler the system must be designed according to accurate heat loss calculations of the house after it being insulated. My question is who does this calculation? The…

Thermostat and Timer Integrated Solution Suitable?
I was wondering if someone can help a noobie here. I have a analog thermostat dial that look and function pretty much like a Honeywell T6360 Room Thermostat, and I also have a separate programmable on/off timer that look like Drayton LP522 Heating & Hot Water Programmer (no temperature control) for water and heating. We…

What a difference an Eco fan makes.
Today we bought an eco fan for our Charnwood C5. Within half an hour of lighting it we could feel the heat compared to 2 hours on previous evenings. It was a case of having to open the lounge door after an hour and a half as it was getting too hot. Would definitely recommend:)
