Ive got a tonne of chestnut and silver birch that has been seasoning since feb and ive got a tonne of ash that i got in october. The chestnut isnt very good as it burns too fast. Upside down flexible flue liner - advice please!
Hi all, My brother has just had a flexible flue liner installed in a house that he's renovating. A builder that we know very well helped him install the flue and it turns out that it's been installed upside down - obviously now a major regret. Getting the 6" liner down the chimney was a very tight squeeze due to 2 sharp…

Solid Fuel Costs
Just bought in some Homefire smokeless coal for my multi fuel stove - wonder what defines the price of this 'stuff' - I paid 19 quid for a 50 kilo bag. Now I reckon that works out at 4.41p/kwhr. My mains gas is 3.14p/kwhr. Now OK oil is 60+p/litre or 5.56p/kwhr. Electricity is 9.6p/kwhr. There is a case for starting…

Can anyone advise on oil central heating?
We're looking to buy a house and there's no gas in the area. It already has oil central heating with a water tank for hot water (not sure if this is heated by oil or is just electric?) I have no idea about how much to expect to pay out each year, considering our gas bill is very low in our current home, about £300 a year.…

Vital Energi plans big raise in heating bill for our housing development
Hi I bought a house in Woodbrook Eco village, Lisburn, N. Ireland just under 2 years ago. The development was a planned eco-village which would have a centralized heating system based on a biomass (wood chip) boiler house, which would in turn supply hot water and heating to the planned 350+ houses/apartments. Subsequently…

Supersers - any good
Wanting to know people's thoughts on supersers. I see they can be bought on amazon for around £60, which is for a 4.2kw model. I remember having one of these when I was a student 8 years ago but never paid for the gas for them as I got it for free from the council yard. Are these things economical to run? I remember the…

Condensing Boilers - Condensing Mode
I have read up quite a few websites to try to get answers on getting condensing boilers to operate at their highest efficiency in domestic situations and and can't say I am much the wiser how you achieve this under all conditions. There is much conjecture that the theoretical 90+% efficiencies claimed by manufacturers is…

Are flue pipe thermometers useful?
Advice please! I have two wood burners, identical models, (Scan Andersen 8-2) one rear flued and the other top flued. If I put my Stovax flue pipe thermometer on the top of the rear flue stove, the optimum temperature is displayed almost regardless of the level of fire in it. The rear flue pipe is too small to attach it.…

Storage Heater - Completely Baffled!
Hi We have just moved into a flat and it has really old storage heaters installed (gutted!) I've read loads of pages and threads and understand how a storage heater works, it's just ours don't seem to fit the standard model! Each of our heaters has a wall switch to turn them on. Each heater then has two dials (no wording…

Coal in multi log burner
Is it possible to burn coal in a log burner, we would like to burn logs only, but they are becoming very expensive £70 for a low trailer load, it would be useful if we could use a bit of coal, but what would the effect be on the stove, it is cast iron and an insert.

Do brick chimneys need lining?
I have just read something about a chimney fire being very likely in a brick unlined chimney. Does anyone know if this is true? I have a relatively new woodburner installation, chimney was swept before installation, HETAS installer said it did not need lining. Oh, and how often should chimney be swept? Has only been used…
