I pressed "off" for smoke alarm on main switch board but nothing changed. I don't really know what to do... I can't sleep... Help!

Have you tried changing the battery? Dying batteries are usually the cause of such noise.

Hi,I completely agree with the above comment, if it is battery operated get hold of it and rotate it left or right and it should come off its bracket, you can then remove the battery until the shops open.

If is mains operated then you will probably have to call out an engineer.

It depends on your smoke alarm!

Google: how do I change a smoke alarm battery

There are loads of suggestions a YouTube videos, at least you know it's the smoke alarm. I had some young foreign national student neighbours once who came round knocking really freaked out and frightened as the though they had a weird animal stuck in the house, they were so scared they didn't want to contact their landlord.

It was so funny, they wouldn't believe me that it was the smoke alarm, I ended up changing the battery for them but it was also wired if i remember it continued chirping without the battery, it was just the ladder bit that was awkward as I'm quite short in height.

Hope you get it fixed, if you are in a rental and can't work out what to do call your landlord, and just explain that you don't want to damage anything and ask if they have instructions.

It will be the battery even if mains operated - they all have battery back up in case of power failure
  • And some of the batteries are sealed in for life and can't be removed. Many of those the fire brigade dish out for free are like this. I was sweeping a ladys chimney and hers was going off - "Oh don't you worry, I'll get the stepladder and sort that out for you while I'm here". Spent about ten minutes trying to undo the very tiny recessed "screw" on the battery retainer, before getting the torch to figure why it wasn't coming undone, and then discovered it was a security rivet thing!!

Hers was taken down and went in the shed - still beeping - until a replacement was found!
