Can anyone advise on oil central heating?

We're looking to buy a house and there's no gas in the area. It already has oil central heating with a water tank for hot water (not sure if this is heated by oil or is just electric?)

I have no idea about how much to expect to pay out each year, considering our gas bill is very low in our current home, about £300 a year.

The house is a 3 bedroom detached with insulated cavity walls and the loft is also insulated. It has double glazing too, not sure how old though. I suspect we will also have to replace the boiler so this would be based on a new condesing boiler. Boilerjuice has said a delivery of 500 litres would cost £304.

Will oil work out cheaper than perhaps using an electric boiler or putting electric heaters in?

At current prices(around 60p/litre = approx 6p/kWh) oil is approx twice the price of gas per kWh at around 3p/kWh.

    Electricity is around 10p-11p/kWh.

Even with an oil boiler with poor efficiency should still be cheaper than electricity, and a new high efficiency boiler would be much cheaper.

The big problem with oil is the volatility of prices - as you can see from the thread on this, the price varies from month to month.

    Thanks

Been doing some research and pretty sure that gas hasn't been put into that road yet so it seems oil is the best way to go.

I'm trying to find out an average of what people use a month but it's harder than it seems!

However, condensing boilers, as Cardew quite rightly points out in another thread are only efficient if they run at lower return water temps, Or you could investigate whether an air source heat pump would be suitable, with £1,200 grant available at the moment this might make the difference between the cost of installing another oil boiler. Running costs per year roughly half (or better) that of buying oil.

Could you please point me in the direction of this grant?

    Thanks
