Do brick chimneys need lining?

I have just read something about a chimney fire being very likely in a brick unlined chimney. Does anyone know if this is true? I have a relatively new woodburner installation, chimney was swept before installation, HETAS installer said it did not need lining. Oh, and how often should chimney be swept? Has only been used about 8-10 times over last 12 months before we moved into this house - so should it be swept again?

Should not need swept after 10uses. I assume you have a liner within your brick chimney but the HETAS said you didnt need a flexi liner?0

You don`t have to line a chimney if it is in good condition.
Flue gases from a stove that is slumbered or burning wet wood will tend to condense and deposit creosote etc onto a cold chimney interior faster than they might in a lined chimney as a liner is usually warmer (due to insulation and less volume) and thus will be less likely to suffer this problem. I would not worry about it to much, just get your chimney swept once per year at your usage and the sweep will advise on what he finds. I believe that insurers requires that chimneys are swept anually anyway.
Hope this makes sense. If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you! :dance:0 -
I would always say sweep your chimney after a summer of not using it - be suprised what can find its way in
But then we have a rookery of around a thousand birds at the end of our drive so we really do have to be meticulous0 -
Should not need swept after 10 uses.
Hmmm depends if the op has burnt wet wood or slumber burnt, also possible there could be a birds nest blocking flue etc etc
If you have not burn it in a while then as a safety precaution get it swept and then get a co detector if you dont have one already. You may click thanks if you found my advice useful0
