Leaking drain
Hi, I noticed a few small internal cracks inside my ground floor extension a few months ago. I had a full Structural Inspection undertaken and the Engineer said it was either two things causing the issue; 1) A nearby tree (I have since had this cut down and the stump removed) 2) A leaking drain causing the clay to slip. I…

Is heating on/water off ok?
When I’m going away for a few days, I like to turn the water off at the mains in case of flood. I used to have to turn the stopc0ck thingy but now there’s a handy switch on the wall. At this time of year, I don’t want to turn the heating off in case of frozen or burst pipes so I usually leave it to come on for a few hours…

Recommendations wanted - luxury toilet seats?
I stayed at a Shangri La hotel recently, and for some reason, the toilet seat in the bathroom really impressed me. It had this solid, luxurious feel, and closed gently but firmly. It's very odd because I've never paid much attention toilet seats before. We refurbished our house a few years ago and replaced 3 toilets - but…

Cold draft coming though socket
Hi My living room is quite cold, and I have identified that cold air is coming though the power socket. Looks like it is not properly insulated. Any advise on how can I fix this? I don’t want to remove the socket and apply foam, in more after adding a cover or a stopper. Thanks

Agreed quote for work increased last minute
To cut a long story short i had a quote for some clearance work in my front garden, cutting back, some earth removal that sort of thing. After a couple of hours of work, i was told some of the work is a little more difficult than anticipated (they came to look at what needed to be done prior to the quote) , so they…

Carbon Monoxide
Hope someone can help. Is CO heavier than air? I've had conflicting advice whether to fit a CO detector at high or low level. Please don't advise where to fit it. I just want to know if it's heavier than air. Thanks. AE

Beat way for privacy on windows
Although I’m not on a main road, when people walk past my house they can see in my windows. I would like to keep my blinds open/let in light so I’m thinking of getting the windows frosted. https://www.purlfrost.com/frosted-window-film/ I’ve checked Amazon reviews and although they are mostly good, a few people have claimed…

Cost of very small kitchen.
How much would people guess the cost would be to replace 3 bottom kitchen units plus 3 wall mounted units in a kitchen restyling? I'm guessing it would be an Ikea one. So basically gut the above and pumb in/ink up sink, gas electric and replace work surface? Obviously to include fitting! Am on a smartphone! Thanks.

Artego German Kitchens
We are looking at new kitchens and a local independent kitchen retailer has offered us an Artego Kuchen, make of German Kitchen. From the samples we've seen they look to be decent quality with a few nice options. Information on the brand in the UK is quite limited. Does anyone have any experience of these kitchens? Are…

Tradesmen damaged upstairs wiring
Looking for some advice. I had a loft company come to board the loft, enlarge the hatch, install a loft ladder and remove some waste. Unfortunately immediately after installation was complete the lighting tripped out upstairs and hasn't worked since. I got an electrician to come out the next day who said that there must…

Radiator drain off
Hi I have a rad in my kitchen. With a built in drain off. I want to put leak additive in my heating system. Can I drain the rad in the kitchen enough for the additive. Do I then put the additive in the same rad or can I put it in a towel rail rad as it's easier I have little understanding of this. Thanks

Boiler Problems!
Hi all We purchased our house approx 1.5 years ago. It is a mid-terrace 1970s house, it was originally built with hot hair heating but was retrofitted with central heating and a gas combi boiler at an unknown time. When we purchased the house we demanded a gas inspection from the vendor; the inspector reported no problems.…

Partially blocking a chimney
We have an open chimney that I am keen to keep; we like the occasional fire for atmosphere. We have no free source of wood, so I'm no interested in installing a stove. The chimney is open at the top (no pot), and ventilation is obviously required to keep it dry - but a fair amount of heat goes up and out all day every day.…

Gas and electric safety certificates
Hi all, We are having our kitchen refitted and I am confused about whether we need gas and electric safety certificates. Our fitter is adamant that we don't but I am not so sure. All he has done is replace the gas hob, removed an isolator switch and put in a new socket. This new socket is off the existing ring circuit and…

Tips for Soundproofing
Our neighbours are lovely but the bloke not only loves the sound of his own voice but he also speaks several decibels louder than normal. We can also hear them closing drawers / cupboards in their kitchen as it's adjacent to our lounge which is where we spend most of our time. We will be decorating the lounge in the new…
