Wireless doorbells
Our doorbell is kaput - doesn't work - over twenty years old. On the one hand that is very useful, because it means that I do not have to take in various and numerous parcels for the folks next door, because I cannot hear the postman when he rings the bell. However, I do wish to hear genuine callers and have been looking…

Multi fuel stove stinking, solvent type smell
We had our multi fuel stove installed probably early on 2016 if i remember right. So it was burned later that year into 2017 and then later 2017 in to 2018 and now it's being burned again. We do have an issue with the stove in that it's only 5mm away from the rear wall. This is going to get looked at next year as we're…

Independent Sunroom Survey!
Is it worth having an Independent Survey done on a new Sunroom that was too small to qualify for building regs, don't trust the company surveyor as he is on the payroll and i know skimping goes on with these things. Also what would be the likely cost of surveying a small 14ft by 6ft Sunroom.:xmassign:

Is clothes storage in damp basement possible?
I have a holiday apartment which has a portion of the large basement area set aside for my storage. There is no obvious water, but anything I put down there seems to gets mildew on it quite quickly. The basement is semi-subterranean and has windows at the top which are just above ground level. About 20 apartments share the…

Tree lights
Hi everyone, sorry if I've put this in the wrong forum, but didn't know which to put it in. I had to buy some new multi coloured lights for my Christmas tree, and they're aweful. Firstly, I don't like blue lights, but in the past it hasn't mattered too much. Well these, once on tree, the blue ones drowned out the other…

Gas heating dilemma.
Hi, we are going down under for 3 months in January and have been taking professional advice on what to do to avoid frozen water pipes etc. Trouble is we have had two conflicting views! I should also say that our house insurers have no specific requirements relating to water/heating in these circumstances. We have a Logic…

Fitted wardrobes
Swmbo has decided that we need new wardrobes, and she wants fitted ones. The current fitted wardrobes don't really use the space efficiently and there have been modern changes in the last ten years (or whenever the previous owners fitted them). We've had quotes from two local firms, as well as Hammond, Sharp and…

Bath shower mixer advice
My current bathroom setup is a standard bath with dual taps and an electric shower above, I also run a combi boiler. The electric shower is coming to the end of it's life and this time of year the flow isn't that great anyway with the higher temp you have to set it. Which brings me on to the bath taps. There's always been…

Can I fix a broken light switch myself?
I went to flick a light switch yesterday and the switchy bit cracked and popped out. I found a couple of bits of plastic and a spring. Whats left on the wall looks like this: https://imgur.com/iTT7pM8 Is this a simple repair? Can I do it myself or do I need to call an electrician? If the latter, how much should I be…

How soon can you paint a rendered wall?
The mix will include lime or 'strengthening fibres' i know that much, and rendering/plastering sand (not grit/sharp sand and not building sand). Basically the recess where our multi fuel stove is is going to have the boards cut out and rather than be boarded out (because it hasn't worked) it's going to be rendered. I know…

How to deal with water hammer from washing machine?
For the last couple of years, I've put up with water hammer from my machine when it stops filling. I'd like to try and put a stop to this, or significantly reduce it. Access to the pipes is difficult as they go behind the kitchen cupboards etc. I'm not confident enough in my DIY skills to take kitchen cupboards apart to…
