Tiles lifting from fireplace?
We are fans of lighting the fire. We've not had much luck however with fireplaces. The last 2 houses all the tiles cracked on the hearth and we had to replace with slate. We're in this house a month now, its got a marble hearth so we thought would have no issues. This https://imgur.com/a/VSt8s is the new fireplace. As you…

Problems with new Oil fired central heating system
Hi, I received a grant for a new oil fired heating system. It was installed about 1 month ago. Since then it have been making noises that I think are called kettling. The water in the pipes rumbles in the tank in the loft and also when the hot water tank on the first floor fills. It is so noisy it seems like the whole…

Hi! Just moved house (yay), boxes all stuck in a storage unit, don't have a car or van :( :(. We work 9-5 all week (Central London) and the storage closes at 6 (South West London), so we don't really have time to get there and do any moving unless it's at the weekend. Does anybody know a good company that could get our…

Insulation under kitchen cabinets?
Our kitchen is way too cold in winter. The house is built on a slope, and there's a void space under the floor varying from around 8 feet high at one end, to zero at the other. This has air vents in the brickwork, so the wind can whip in through those. The flooring is wooden joists with chipboard on top, a layer of 3/4"…

Roof lining replacement and velux installation
Hi Apologies, I'm a little clueless with anything other than using a paint brush when it comes to home improvement. I have quite a few leaks in my clay tile roof. I think where some old creepers have made their way up to the roof they have lifted some tiles. There are also some holes in the roof lining (60 year old house…

Gas Boiler wont re-light
This question concerns a Glow-worm Space Saver 50 MkII (Open Flue) boiler. My gas boiler has been turned off for several months while I have done a repair to the central heating system and cleaned out the radiators. For good measure I have now refilled the system with water and cleaning fluid (Fernox F3 Cleaner). After…

Cleaning UPVC
Hi folks, My UPVC frames are in need of a clean. I bought some UPVC solvent cleaner from Toolstation which really has shifted some stubborn stains, but there are some minor marks that it won't shift. I've tried some Cif cleaner and it seems to work but I'm reluctant to use it again as apparently it can dull the finish on…

washing machine isolator valve
The isolator valve on the end of the cold feed to my washing machine is faulty. To replace it do I just unscrew the nut which appears to be holding it to the end of the pipe, push on a new one and tighten the nut up or is it more tricky than that?

Changing a Drayton thermostat
My sisters boiler clicks on, and on, and on when it comes on; it works ok otherwise. Her heating system uses a 'Tempus Three' thermostat. I have read that these controllers have a back plate, and a more modern controller may be an easy switch. I have never done anything like this, is it a easy job? Cost?

How much does a new Boiler cost?
How much? I was quoted £2k earlier. Fair enough if this is a good price but the cynic in me (;)) says it could be cheaper for a decent boiler!! I understand there are different brands, premium ones, ones with bells and whistles, super duper energy efficient blah blah blah ones. Im looking for something decent that does the…

Plumbing vent clogged
I've noticed a sewage smell particularly around the second level of a three story townhouse for a while, after ruling out the other half, faulty extractor fans and fairly positive it wasn't me I've got it narrowed down to a clogged plumbing vent. The reason Im convinced its the plumbing vent is the top floor bathroom basin…

leaky pipes
Gooday, We had a plumber in our bungalow to see what was making the solid floor wet. On investigating he found the copper water pipes buried in the cement floor had been leaking maybe for a long time too. He said that the leaks could have caused some movement of the inside walls as there were some small cracks on the…

Hi there, We are going through the planning process to convert our dairy into an annexe but have been told by Snowdonia National Park Authority that we need a flood risk assesment. We are next to a tiny river but it has never flooded anywhere near the dairy. This is what they have said, I attach a screenshot of the correct…
