Best place to find a (cheap) plumber?
Hi all, I'm hoping the MSE hive mind can help a bit... :j I need someone to come and do my boiler's Gas Safety Certificate, and I'm just wondering where the best place to find cheap, but obviously safe, plumbers? Want to compare some prices and get someone cheap, because renting out a house apparently makes you haemorrhage…

Painted on plasterboard - now residual paint on walls?!
Hi, Went round the house and touched up all the walls that had marks on with the Exact paint the decorators used when they painted the plasterboard walls in our new build. Now on the surface it has left a chalk type paint so when anybody brushes up against the wall it leaves a mark on clothes. I've read that I maybe need…

New driveway ...How to prevent cowboys?
We have just had a reasonable quote from our council to drop the curb outside our semidetached house (without a garage) provided we use permeable surfacing which we would want anyway. Our driveway is small but will be able to fit two cars on when its finished. My question is....we are not builders and havent got a clue…

Using Different Bulbs in Old Spotlight
I have an old 3 bulb spotlight in my kitchen which uses reflector 80mm edison screw bulbs. My query is will I be able to use the new energy saving type of bulb in this fitting and if yes what would be the equivalent available bulb in the shops now.

Best way to repair underfloor (tile) bathroom plumbing?
I came downstairs this morning to find a puddle on the kitchen floor. Once I’d woken up enough to investigate, I decided it’s from the bathroom sink drainpipe. This is based solely on its position compared to the place where the water came through the ceiling. The bathroom floor is tiled in all exposed areas, so checking…

Dyson upright- replace filters?
Does anyone know if the two filters in a 6 year old DC25 dyson upright should be replaced every few years? We wash them every now and then as directed but I just wonder if that is good enough after all this time and the materials that they are made of might not be as effective as time goes on. Thanks

Neighbour turned me into a semi detatched
Hi All, I have a detached house. On one side the wall of my house is right up to the boundary. My neighbour did have a driveway between me and the side of his house. What's he's done is build a carport, not a big deal, but then he's boarded up the front and back with wood then fixed wooden uprights to the car port struts…

Hot water system - noise and not enough hot water
We have a combi system using a BoilerMate 2 on the upper floor that was working well until a couple of weeks ago. The only thing that changed was temporarily shutting off the water in order to repair a leak in some hot water sink piping downstairs. 1) Initially, the problem was that when running the bath, you got about an…

Long term leaks...
Hello all, Discovered today that we've had a slow leak from our hot water tank for probably a very long time. The airing cupboard has had a damp smell since we moved in 3 or 4 years ago but just thought it was condensation. But something fell from the shelf behind the water tank and it has led to the discovery of a puddle…

Vinyl tiles - self adhesive
Decorating my bedroom and wondering what people think about having vinyl tiles in the bedroom. It's not normally something I would think of doing but.... Similar to my other thread... I've seen it in some IKEA show rooms and it looked nice. Also...how is this stuff laid on floorboards upstairs?

Letterbox draught excluder needed
Hello, we're in a rented property with a 1930s front door. The letterbox is at chest height, and anyone posting something through the letterbox can see straight into the house. I've been trying to find a draught excluder but as it's an old door the size is unusual. Could anyone advise if there is a diy solution to this…

How to remove artex?
My staircase has a stippling artex type of finish. I can see faint lines, as if it was covered by lining paper before this finish was applied. Is that what it is, and how will I rove it? I quite like it, but where there has been building/electrical work done, it looks terrible.

Draughts around panes in double glazing
Can anyone help? Our house has some slightly older double glazing, and there are a few draughts around the edge of the glass where it neets the frame (i.e. NOT around the outside of the frames, so adjusting hinges won't work). It's where the rubber/foam seal meets the actual glass. It only seems to be draughty in a couple…

They are also charging £6 per sq m for underlay and quite a bit of extras. Total bill is £3242 Wondering if anyone…

Ceiling skimmed over artex, not quite the finish I expected
I had some plastering done as part of a larger job, and it went over an artex ceiling. This is the finish I've found today after completion - almost the entire ceiling has the pattern still visible on it and in much of it I can feel the ridges if I touch it. The pictures are pretty bad from my phone, but you get the idea.…

Conservatory Roof Shattered - Why?
Hi, Two months ago we had a new UPVC double glazed conservatory roof fitted. It was made up of six panels, in total an area of 4 x 5 metres. At the weekend, it wasn't raining or windy, but one of the external panes shattered. Can anyone suggest a reason for this? Best regards, Sidcup

Recommendations for cheap home cctv
Hi folks, Can anyone recommend a good cheap home cctv system? One of my neighbours keeps dumping their rubbish outside my house and filling up my bins while I'm at work and I want to catch them at it! I haven't really looked into it much yet, thought I'd ask for recommendations first. Don't want to spend a fortune. I just…

Pre-mixed/small quantity wallpaper paste?
About a month ago, I papered my hallway, with paintable wallpaper. I'm now getting ready to paint, and noticed one corner, just over/alongside a doorway, didn't look right, so I've cut it out, so I can fit a new piece. The replacement piece is ~ 6"x15", and I'd rather not mix up a whole batch of paste, for such a small…
