Renewing a Flat Roof
Anyone here with recent experience of having a flat roof renewed, mine was done about 30 years ago and there appears to be more options available now. My flat roof is attached to the side of the house, it is not a lived-in space but a passageway and old coal shed. It is also attached to the neighbours coal shed and in full…

Can't get tap valve off to change washer
We've had a dripping tap since we moved in to our new house, and I thought, hey, changing a washer! That's a good entry level DIY job for a new home owner. Let's get on that. I got the tap off easily enough, but for the life of me I can't get the valve to unscrew. I've tried hot water and WD40 (not at the same time), and…

Toilet filling up very slowly until bathroom tap is switched on
Hi Someone here had a similar problem in 2011, and I wondered if anyone has an answer for it today. My push-button toilet cistern (installed about 5 years ago) has stopped filling up properly. Ie - it fills up very slowly. I'm not very practical, but had a look inside anyway. I could see a thin stream of water coming out…

Screws for Downpipes
Hello.:) I have a rendered house, which has recently been re-rendered and new soffits, gutters etc installed. Now I have come to paint, I notice that while most screws holding the pipe supports are stainless steel, some are not, so they will probably rust over time. Also, when removing the screws to paint behind the pipes…

Up & over garage door stuck how can I move it?
I've got an up & over garage door, the type with springs at the side, it is stuck in the closed position, can't shift it at all. Fortunately the car wasn't in the garage at the time. I've tried pushing it from the outside and pulling it from the inside but it won't budge. Any suggestions please?

Masking tape damage - puckered edges
Made the classic mistake of leaving my masking tape on for (far) too long, quite a few small tears (and a few bigger ones). What's the best way to repair this, it's right down to the bare plaster? In addition, some of the larger tears are puckered/raised at the edges, do these need to be treated differently? Originally I'd…

Land/boundary advice
Hi All. Apologies if this is not in the right forum! I'm after some advice regarding property boundary. My nextdoor neighbour believes some land is shared between us(?) and therefore we should come to a boundary agreement as to where the boundary lies. From what we (and other neighbours who have the same set up) believe,…

Cost of replacing RSJ in lounge?
Hi, Not sure if this is a question for a builder or a structural engineer but here goes... We are buying a house which may need the ceiling in the lounge to come down and a new support fitted. A load bearing wall was removed about 40 years ago and there are signs that the support used at the time was not adequate. Does…

Does anybody have any experience with Cavity wall insulation? We were adviced we could get a bit of money off through a scheme to have our walls insulation with closed sell isothane spray foam, apparently it's the best technology out there for cavity walls. Just digging a hole in the front lawn to plant a bush and found a twin core cable about 6 inches down, looking at it it appears to go towards to front garden wall, on the other side of the wall there are signs that the path has a disturbed surface along it and a 'T' that heads to my garden wall. On the side of my house is…
