Does my budget for rear extension work?
We are hoping to move into our new house in the next two weeks and as soon as we can get a builder and party wall agreement, start a rear single story extension to create a large kitchen diner. Our budget for the entire project is £45-£50k and the relevent points (as I see them) are as follows: * SW London * 3m extension…

Reusing a granite worktop and oak units
We've got lots of work to do on our house on a low budget including relocating and replacing the kitchen. We've been offered a beautiful quality 7 year old kitchen, solid oak doors with granite worktops in excellent condition and will fit our space with minimal alteration needed. We've agreed a price but the current owners…

Water build up when having a shower
Hi all, I am hoping someone can help me with a slight problem we are having in our house that we have just moved in to. When we have a shower although the water is draining away down the plughole it doesnt seem to be doing it very fast and the water stays quite high in the plughole corner of the shower tray until the water…

Painting room white - what about picture rail?
Hi there - I'm looking for a bit of style/colour advice. I have a room that is quite dark, so I'm in the middle of painting it white. However, it has a picture rail 18 inches or so from the top of the ceiling and it looks a bit odd to have that in white too. It seems a shame to "waste" a feature like that by losing it by…

eRAD infra-red heating system
I see from an older, now closed thread on here, that some people had problems getting this system installed. I am just wondering now that they have if they can comment further on the system and the savings they are experiencing??? Can anyone with an eRad system shed light on this?

Adding diagonal bracing to roof trusses
Morning all, We are first time homeowners (finally!) and are just finding our way with DIY etc so please excuse the complete novice. Our homebuyers report noted a lack of diagonal bracing in our 1969 end terrace, I gather from reading around that this is quite common for this type of build/era. However, I am keen to get…

Dulux/Crown brilliant white gloss paid
Hi, I painted my wooden doors and skirting boards with one of the above paints a couple of years ago, I can't remember which one but definitely one of them. They turned off white within months until they are now, what I would describe as magnolia. I have decided to try painting them again. I still want them to be white but…

Immersion heater not working?
Hello, We have a Heatrae - Pullin 27" Gold dot immersion heater. We have recently moved home and have no central heating system fitted, only an immersion tank for hot water. This has stopped working today and is no longer heating any water. We have tried to change the fuse in the switch in case it was something simple,…

Electrical rewire advice (Scotland)
Hi Sorry for the long tale, you can skip to last sentence! We have recently been renovating my late fathers house. It required nearly everything doing including a full rewire. The wiring was original in a 1900s house! We took the recommendation from our builder (who has been mega reliable) for a local electrician. In fact,…

Con man seems to have done me over!
Need any advice people can spare on this as i'm on the edge of madness with this. We had some windows replaced a few years ago and to cut a long story short some of the glazing units failed and were replaced by the company that fitted it. 9 months later the remaining units all failed but he refused to replace them. His…

Electric oven and hob
Just a bit of background... I bought a house which needed gutting. I had the place rewired and in the kitchen there is one of those plug sockets with a separate switch for a cooker and then a big thick wire for it coming out and going to the cooker. Kitchen is being plastered ready to be refitted on Thursday and its only…

How to get dry rot sorted
We have a Victorian house. Just seen evidence of dry rot fungus seeping from skirting board in one small corner of front room which we don't use very much. The other side of the wall got wet some time ago when a downpipe was leaking. It's also above a damp basement. I am aware of the potentially scary nature of this so you…

Inexpensive Fridge Freezer for Garage
Hi, I looking to buy a new fridge freezer for use in the garage. So many of the fridge freezers I've been looking at say not suitable for use in a garage and I assume that this would invalidate any warranty. I've noticed that Beko do something called 'Freezer Guard Technology' and the CF540W is £280 from Argos with the…

Solvent Based or Water Based Satinwood?
Ive undercoated all my doors and frames in a solvent based undercoat as I was covering yellowed gloss. Which is best to use as the top coat - water based or solvent based satinwood? A few of my doors don't get much sunlight so I don't want them going yellow again after a few months like last time I did them years ago.
