Solvent Based or Water Based Satinwood?

Ive undercoated all my doors and frames in a solvent based undercoat as I was covering yellowed gloss. Which is best to use as the top coat - water based or solvent based satinwood? A few of my doors don't get much sunlight so I don't want them going yellow again after a few months like last time I did them years ago.

I've not used solvent based for yars now.
So I would say water based. The Homebase or B&Q own label products have both worked well for me

The only benefit of using water based is it will be low odour.

You get a better finish with solvent based as waterbased dries as your applying it.

Solvent based will also give a finish thats more hardwearing. As for "yellowing" etc I don't have a clue which is best but all of the good tradesmen I know use the solvent based satinwood.

I use water based as we have pets and need quick drying, the fumes make me feel ill and it stays white for longer.

We had the yellowing effect 3 years ago and contacted Dulux who said that it was nothing to do with sunlight.
They gave us vouchers for a lump of new paint and recommended that we use water based which will not yellow.

The new paint has been on now for 3 years and has not yellowed but points to watch are that it doesn't cover as well (2 coats instead of 1) and as pointed out the finish is not as hard wearing or as 'shiney'.

I've mentioned all this before on a forum but was told that the new gloss (solvent) paints don't yellow as they used to - if you have a local Dulux Trade place, I would pop in and ask their advice.

In our previous flat I spent days painting the whole flat in satinwood solvent-based Dulux....only for it to go yellow within 6 months

In the current place I used water-based and have had no issues whatsoever.

Most white paints are made with the pigment Titanium Dioxide, the difference is in the base they use. The yellowing was caused when EU instructed paint manufacturers to reduce VOC's in solvent based paint & therefore they added another a drying oil, & this caused the yellowing.

Water based paint doesn't have the drying oil, so shouldn't yellow to the same degree. The solvent based paint has been improved over the last few years, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem either.

The dulux gloss yellowing happened to me. Unfortunately I didn't complain as I didn't keep the receipt and tin when I painted 2 years ago. This is why I'm worried about yellowing as they were awful especially the ones that didn't get much sunlight on them. I'm tempted to just leave them and all the other woodword ive freshly painted with undercoat as they are. Its taken me a week between working to do the whole house. They look so white with just undercoat and there's only me here. Although not very hardwearing or easy to clean. Im just panicking the whole house will go nicotine yellow again (and no I don't smoke). I have all white walls as well!!
