Painting by yourself vs paying for walls to be painted
We have painted the walls in our house by ourselves for years. The last time we did it we splashed out on farrow and ball but got a bit cocky (imho) and it was patchy and a waste of the paint. My husband seems to think that it is a waste of money to pay someone to do this job. Any advice and some tips from experts would be…

Is there a 'standard' for cutting worktop lengths?
Slight disagreement of opinion between OH and I over where the worktop should end at a run of units (i.e. open ended, not between walls or such like). So is there a standard guideline that says worktop should be flush with the unit side/overhang by a certain amount etc etc? I realise it's also a personal preference thing…

Tumble dryer transportation - safe to lie on side or back?
Hi, I'm moving a tumble dryer from one house to another. My car is a VW Golf so the dryer is too big to stand upright in the car. Will it still be safe if I put the tumble dryer on its side or back when transporting it in my car? Note that this is purely a tumble dryer, not a washing machine. Thanks

I think that I killed the oven yesterday!
We have a very simple Hotpoint fan assisted oven (stainless steel, 60cm built in under worktop), and yesterday I think that I killed it. During the day I made a couple of loaves, then in the evening I made some kebabs under the grill. Towards the end of grilling, the oven lights went out, and the grill stopped, so I turned…

However when looking from the upstairs window could see two gaps in the final fence the final one which had to be cut to fit. The person who did it probably said that it was a knot etc which can occurr in alot of wood/timber. Have asked him to…

connecting dishwasher and washing machine under sink
Just wondering if I can do this myself or if I need to have a plumber? I am in a rental and would like to minimise the work involved. I have waste outlets for both machines but only have one cold water supply. They both require cold water only. The current supply points upwards. Is there some kind of Y shaped fitting I…

Crack inside fridge
I have just noticed that there is a large crack in the bottom of my fridge, just in front of the salad tray. It is a fridge freezer (fridge on top, freezer underneath - seperate doors) I was just wondering if it is safe to use with the crack or will it be less efficient? Thanks

Solving penetrating damp problems - once and for all!
We've owned a house for 5 years now, and have constantly had what I believe to be penetrating damp throughout this time. The damp appears as large patches in various places upstairs, and downstairs (gable end and front), usually after heavy/prolonged periods of rain. On advice from builders, we've had patches re-pointed…

Window locks
I am about to buy a bungalow, with upcv windows. As I am a bit of a fresh air freak and like to sleep with my bedroom window open, but in a bungalow would feel a little (ok a lot) nervous sleeping with an open window. Can you buy locks, which allow the window to stay open a couple of inches?

With One Rock!
Somebody put a rock through my window last week. Window is fixed, but the rock picked a fine spot to hit the wall. With one rock, they've damaged a tile, the plaster, and the door frame  I can fill the plaster, although paint matching may be tricky. What is the best filler to fix the door frame? And does anyone have…

Cost of plastering ceilings
