Is there a 'standard' for cutting worktop lengths?

Slight disagreement of opinion between OH and I over where the worktop should end at a run of units (i.e. open ended, not between walls or such like).
So is there a standard guideline that says worktop should be flush with the unit side/overhang by a certain amount etc etc?
I realise it's also a personal preference thing and you could leave it overhanging by a foot if you wanted to, I just wondered if there was a 'normal' measurement people used.

Personally I usually leave about 25mm unless there is say an 80mm gap to end of wall in which case I'd might go for 40mm to halve it. Also worth considering is if you will find it a hazard to hit your hip on - then you could go for a larger overhang and take the corner off at 45 degrees. I wouldn't recommend flush due to potential spillages getting under the worktop and down the end panel.0

no guide or standard that I know of but does the front not overhang?
mine does
and I have an overhang on either side of one set of units because there is room and its cut at an angle cos of the shape of the units.
of course the worktop fixed to the wall (both ends) does not overhang at the sides but there is a spacer next to the unit against the wall so that would be overhang sort of and the last one is the sink and that has a overhang but not large cos of the back door

As it happens, the worktop overhangs the side by 25mm.
I wanted the end overhang to match the front overhang. (I have used wall units on legs and ripped the worktop down to the width I wanted so the front overhang could have been any size really).Herman - MP for all!
