Leaking from top of window when rains heavily
If it rains heavily and also rains against the side of my house with the patio window, it leaks water from the top of the window / wall. We've had the rendering repaired and a tyrolean coating added. The problem is still occuring though. Anyone got any ideas what could be causing this?

party wall problems
I really don't know what else to do about this - any ideas I'd be most grateful. Lived in this house 8 years. My terrace seems to be well built and there's been a minimum of noise either side (3 flats on 1 side and 2 flats on the other; my (listed) house is tiny so it was too small to convert into flats). No problem until…

Corrigated sheeting on a flat roof
Hi would this be possible to do myself. The garage already has a roof on it, but it tends to leak and I was wondering would it be possible to fit these on top. It is only going to be used as a storage space. Would I need to baton the roof first? Also would I have to add a pitch with some baton? It already has a slight…

Loft Insulation: Is This Normal?
Hi we live in a rented house where the attic has recently been converted into a bedroom. The landlord seemed to have blocked off part of the roof eaves and in the contract it said tenants are not to enter the remaining loft space, which has been blocked up with a small piece of plasterboard. We have been having a lot of…

How much for a 5m x 3m new flat garage roof?
Looking to get my 5m x 3m garage flat roof replaced. It will need re-boarding with OSB3 and I would like it finishing in EPDM or perhaps Fibreglass. Would like to get someone in to do it(I know this can be done DIY but apprehensive over removing old boarding and relaying with slight pitch etc), How much should I expect to…

Fire Safety Windows (Escapable)
My house was built new and completed Sept.2000. None of the First floor windows comply with minimum size rules for escape in event of fire. The existing windows are double glazed in UPVC frames. One bedroom has a roof outside which you could easily stand on to await rescue (only slightly sloped) but the opening window is…

Plastic Cladding for a shower cubicle
I am thinking of putting plastic cladding, like this .. http://www.maxwellsdiy.co.uk/category/plastic-cladding/499.aspx?page=1 in my shower cubicle. Two sides are tiled but water seems to be getting through the grouting. Rather than doing the tiling again, I thought it would be better just to stick this cladding over the…

Encapsulating stained glass
I have an original stained glass window on my landing but the frame is completely rotten and so needs replacing. I am thinking about having the stained glass encapsulating in a UPVC unit. Has anyone had this done before, and if so were you happy with the final result? Does anyone know of a reputable company in the South…

50hz vz 60hz and wattage
I have a US appliance, a knife sharpener (contains a motor, powering a spinning wheel). It is labelled: 120V 60HZ 2.1A 125W I bought a transformer, it is labelled: 220V 50Hz to 110V 150W It burnt out on first use. I'm not sure if it's just a cheap and nasty Chinese transformer that doesn't deliver the rated output, or…

Mould/mildew removal
We're moving house so have started clearing out our garage. Unfortunately because it has gotten a bit damp in places, some of the fabric items now have patches of mould/mildew on them. I'm looking for an effective, cheap and non-toxic way of removing the dreaded stuff. Can anyone recommend a tried and tested way which they…

Aldi 3 Section Loft Ladder
Has anyone previously bought an Aldi 3 section Loft ladder? They are on offer for £44.99 from tomorrow. If so are they any good and what is the maximum height the ladder can reach,as our old loft ladder had to reach down first three stairs and would be about 12 foot. (The old wooden one we had became detached and fell…

Axa Building insurance, insufficient cash settlement
How do all, hope I can get some advice on this one. (Might be in the wrong forum page tho) On buying our first house in September 2011, my partner and I took up buildings and contents insurance with Axa. On 2nd January this year, we were hit by 90mph winds and all of the ridging tiles and a number of roof tiles were blown…

FAO ListysDad & any other heating engineers
I thought you & some others may be interested in this, i went to a boiler breakdown the other wk, it was a 3 yr old baxi that kept locking out, i told them it was a problem with the flow (or lack of it) through the heat exchanger, he then told me that heat team (baxi's service agents) had replaced the heat exchanger,…

Alpha 240e combi boiler problem
hello Wonder if anyone has a clue about this before i call out a plumber... Our combi boiler (Alpha 240e) is having a problem: whenever the heating first comes on from cold it is absolutely fine, but when it fires up to maintain heat the flame keeps going out within a second and then it tries again. Sometimes after a lot…

How long should you wait before tiling over new plaster?
Thanks for any advice, it's a bathroom that'll need replastering as chunks have fallen off when the old tiles have been removed. I am then planning on having large wall tiles put up, (are these recommended?) wouldn't like one falling on someone's head! What is the recommended timescale between plastering and new tiling?

Setting up a system for clotes dryer to take outside air in...
Its a bit of a quick fix, but basically i was thinking of covering my clothes dryer's row of air intake vents at the back (which are designed to take air from the direction of the ground rather than the ceiling) with a strong clear plastic bag, sealing it with duct tape, and fixing a regular dryer vent tube to this bag (in…
