Setting up a system for clotes dryer to take outside air in...

Options
Its a bit of a quick fix, but basically i was thinking of covering my clothes dryer's row of air intake vents at the back (which are designed to take air from the direction of the ground rather than the ceiling) with a strong clear plastic bag, sealing it with duct tape, and fixing a regular dryer vent tube to this bag (in the directino that the vents take air in through), through which air will be taken from. This tube would hang out of a window about a meter away I would also make sure that the clear plastic covering gives the vents space and doesn't get "sucked in" by them.

Just wondering if this would create any problems for the dryer, like the elements overheating. No doubt some of you are wondering why i'd be bothered doing this, its essentially a quick fix to help my clothes smell better.

  • I wouldn't use a plastic bag as it is likely to block the inlet or melt.
If you want to bodge something together, try a cardboard box taped to the back with a hole for the hose, but be careful it doesn't get too hot.
Having said that, I wouldn't bother as I doubt it will help the clothes smell better. Opening a window would have a similar effect and removing dust from behind the machine and anything causing odours in the room.
The cause of fusty smelling clothes could be mould in the washing machine or build up of fluff in the drier.

If your clothes are rinsed properly when they come out of the washer they shouldn't smell when they come out of the dryer.

Adding vinegar (where you would normally put fabric conditioner)to the final rinse would help.

When was the last time you cleaned the washer: Put the empty washer on at its hottest cycle with a cup of vinegar in the soap dispenser?

Have you checked the filters on both machines?
    I'm not that way reclined

Jewelry? Seriously? Sheldon you are the most shallow, self-centered person I have ever met. Do you really think that another transparently-manipu... OH, IT'S A TIARA! A tiara; I have a tiara! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me!

Hadn't considered a cardboard box, that might be an option. Cheers

I've spent quite some time trying to determine how my clothes ended up smelling, turns out it was a combination of the washer and the environment of the clothes dryer (my kitchen). Tackling the environment is something i need to do, but at the minute with school and exams i thought this would be a temporary solution.
