Sharing drains
We have been approached with a request to share our drainage with a new build property being built next door. It will require a pipe going across the width of our front garden (approx 20') and an easement agreement. It is a 1930's detached property, if it makes any difference. Can anybody give an opinion as to the…

What sort of window is this?
I'm looking to get replacements in this style of window, it's not practical for me to have wooden replacements made, is it possible to get them in pvc and what would they be called? Plus would it be better to have the upvc window sills to go with it? They're rotten at the moment so need replacing as well. Thanks

Damp in bathroom brickwork?
I've had bare plaster my bathroom for coming up for 12 months, after I had a new bathroom suite put in and hoiked all tiles and wallpaper off. Prior to this there was a water tank in the corner which had a slow leak over a period of months, followed by a total bathroom flood while I was on holiday. The tank came out and…

Porch Insulation
Hi there, I am in the process of building a brick porch with a 50mm cavity. I cannot decide whether to put a thin layer of insulation board in the cavity, whilst maintaining a small gap e.g. 25mm (I rang the local the local BCO and they would not offer advice as it is 'except' from BR). The porch is separated from the…

Integrated kitchen appliances
I have a Howden's kitchen and one of the tower units has an electric oven in the mid-section and a microwave near the top section. They are labelled as Hotpoint but I suspect that today they would be Lamona badged appliances. I want to replace both appliance in the future and was wondering if integrated appliances come in…

Do I Need to Replace Soffit Board
My neighbours recently replaced their roof (pitched) and at the time we did not notice that there is a hole in the soffit board that adjoins their roof. It was not caused by the work that they did as it looks like the wood has been rotting a little for a while. This is in the corner where the party wall is with their…

Dining chair makeover
Morning, Am now on the final leg of my refurb (6 beech chairs) and I am very pleased with the result so far (back to bare wood). Applying the finish is next but I don’t want to apply anything that is either spray or a paint brush applied. Having now seen what was hiding beneath the old brown stain and varnish, I want to…

New plaster/woodburning stove - primer or mist coat? - Please help.
Hi, We have just had a recess built for a wood-burning stove to be put in. I need to paint the plaster and I am not sure what to use. Insulating solid walls
Hi, There are alot of companies offering subsidised cavity wall insulation, but our house has solid walls and no cavity. I think we'll have to board the walls with insulated plasterboard. Does anybody know if there are any government subsidies to help with this? It surprises me there are so many cavity wall incentives yet…

How would you go about removing orange gloss from woodwork in a room and taking it back to white? Could you paint over it or would you need to remove it first? If so how would you remove it? Thanks in advance

We have a bay window that jutts out of the front of the house so there is a kind of flat roof above the window. I need to buy a couple of smallish rugs for a bedroom and a medium one for the kitchen (to put on top of the wood flooring). Are there any good online suppliers where I can just order the rugs from, safe in the knowledge that they'll be of fairly decent quality at a reasonable price?
