New plaster/woodburning stove - primer or mist coat? - Please help.

Hi,

We have just had a recess built for a wood-burning stove to be put in. I need to paint the plaster and I am not sure what to use. I have a tub of Artex Cove Primer which says it can be used for applying to porous surfaces (other than coving) or should I use a mist coat of emulsion?

I then plan to use ordinary emulsion on the top. Do I need a specialist heat-resistant paint as the stove will be three inches from the painted walls of the recess?

Thanks in advance for any comments that you have.

James

I would definitely use a heat resistant paint on top as the stoves get very very hot. As for sealing the plaster I would just use a mist coat
  • Thanks Latecomer. Is there a heat-resistant paint that you would recommend?

We've just painted the front and inside of our rendered fireplace with emulsion nothing fancy needed, you only need high temp paint for the register plate, in which case B&Q sell spray high temp paint in a few colours.

We painted the new plaster on the walls with a mist coat and then ordinary emulsion. The top is all metal, sprayed the same colour as the stove using stove paint. The stove was in use a lot last winter and the paintwork is fine but our stove is in a larger recess than yours.
  • Thanks all. I will go with the emulsion and the mist coat.

I used ordinary emulsion on mine. Be aware though that if you paint it with anything but white, it will end up going white (at least mine did!) because of the heat.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.
  • It will be Egyptian Cotton so probably won't be too noticeable but thanks for the heads up - I will warn the Mrs!
