What type of paint do I need to paint the leading around our bay window?

We have a bay window that jutts out of the front of the house so there is a kind of flat roof above the window.

This is covered by lead which also comes down the front of the top of the window by a couple of inches.

I have seen that some people further up the street have painted theirs black.

The person who fitted our double glazing said we would need to buy a specialist paint for lead, other paints would be soaked up by it.

I have tried searching but just get results concerning paint which contains lead.

Does anyone know what the brand of paint is that I need to search for please?

Ta.

You are not really supposed to paint lead flashing, clean it up with water and a non scratchy kitchen scourer and then wipe it down with the Patination Oil.. my OH used to do a lot of lead work and thats how he used to treat old flashing . You used to be able to buy it in Wickes but probably a good Plumbers merchant would sell it..

EDIT: Wickes seem to still sell it..http://www.wickes.co.uk/patination-oil/invt/240295/?source=123_4

They probably just used bog standard external gloss which WILL flake in time because adhesion isn't that good. Not sure what he means by "would be saoked up by it". If the lead was treated properly on installation with patination oil then I cant see it. If you must paint it clean off all weathering effects using clean water and a pan scourer. Try a coat of BIN (sticks to anything) before the topcoat.

Thats the alternative of course, clean as before and repatinate after its dry. Should come up lovely.

    Cheers

    Thanks for the advice folks.

I think it is the original flashing and the old lady next door who has lived there for nearly 50 years (we bought 8 years ago) the houses must be about 80 years old if not more and the leading is the original flashing.

I will take a look in Wickes next time I am passing.

Sorry for being thick but what is BIN?

I don't do much DIY but more than my husband, he is useless at it!

Sorry you aren't being thick at all - my fault for not being specific. Its a shelac based universal primer/sealer made by Zinsser of the USofA. Zinsser paints are the best thing to come out of there in eons.

    Cheers

PS Is he deliberately useless do you think? :D

use bedec multi surface paint , it doesn't need any primer and stays flexible so it won't crack or peel
