Fan above shower
I have two fans in my bathroom, one located directly above the shower unit and the other one is on the outside wall next to the toilet. The fan directly above the shower does not extract the steam, it doesn't seem to do anything. Is it possible that this fan is supposed to bring fresh air in? Or is it more likely that it…

Domestic Air Conditioning (Split System) Maintenance Contract
Hi I will shortly be purchasing a split system with 1x outside unit and 2x inside units for my house (domestic). I am new to aircon but have read that aircon systems should be serviced to ensure reliable operation. I have a few questions: Q1. How frequently should they be serviced? Annually? Q2. Should I set up a…

more than "just" a double oven?
I'm in the fortunate position to be able to choose a new kitchen in the next few months. I love to cook, and would love a huge oven (or 2). I'm not a fan of the under counter/floor standing types like a big Aga or range cooker, and would prefer to have a built in eye-level type thing. I suppose I could always put in 2…

Switching to gas cooker, what fittings?
Due to costs, I'm thinking of switching from 'lecky to gas cooker. This fitting is in wall - I'm thinking this is a bayonet socket, but am wondering if that's a blanking cover on the end? What do I need to connect to a cooker, which all seem to use 1/2" BSP on the cooker itself.

Creaking / Squeaky Floorboards
We are today decorating our spare room to change into a nursery and in parts of the room the floor boards are squeaky. Out of interest I have just pulled up my carpets to nail down some floorboards to try and eradicate the squeaking and noticed a series of scribbles over a few sections of the floorboards in pencil - is…

Bulb went - and blew a hole in itself
Today a light blew and tripped one of the socket switches as it did so. Not so out of the ordinary - this would sometimes happen in our old house. However, when I took the lightbulb out to replace it, a hole had been blown in right through the base of the bulb (picture below). We had this lamp in our old house and it never…

Help with heat output of open fire v. woodburner
I am trying to work out (expenditure wise) if it is worth having a woodburning stove instead of the current open fireplace in my house/living room. I currently burn coal on an open grate and whilst this creats some heat the room is mainly kept warm by the two radiators which are served by the gas central heating boiler.…

Do I need planning to change the colour of our roof tiles
I need to replace the very leaky roof on my house. We do not live in a conservation area and have a very average 1930's 3 bedroom semi. Not sure if I want to replace the current roof tiles with clay ones of the same colour as every other house in the street or go for a grey tile which I think would make my house look…

Combi boiler hot water problem
I have a problem with the hot water from my Worcester 28CDi combi boiler. Unless the taps are turned on at full power (which is causing splashing) the boiler is not firing up. If the pressure is turned down once hot water is flowing then the boiler shuts down. We have a thermosatic shower running from the boiler and today…

Replacing Pulsa Coil 2000 water heater
My Pulsa Coil 2000 (economy 7) has stopped generating any hot water. I've had the unit checked but I'm told that it's faulty and beyond economic repair. I'd like to replace it and make sure the new unit has a good reputation/fuel efficient etc. Does any one have any recommendations on the best options for this type of…

Bathroom Floor Conundrum
I am trying to plan a makeover for my bathroom but the very first stage has got me stumped. I would like vinyl flooring laid - at the moment it's bare floorboards, some of which are rotten due to leaking bath. Obviously some of these will need replacing and the floor boarded before the vinyl goes down. Does the bathroom…

New combi boiler
I have 2 bed flat, 6 rads and 1 barhroom. I have an Alpha combi which is working ok now but has cost me over £1k in repairs over the last 18 months. I've had a quote to fit a Vaillant Glowworm 35 Cxi with a Horizontal Flue ( boiler comes with a 5 year warranty). Any feedback on that boiler or make? I don't like the way…

Can I get marks of vinyl matt painted walls?
I recently moved into a third floor flat with my two year old and then (without thinking) updated my sofa. On the way upstairs the feet have slightly marked the wall. I have got almost all of them off carefully with a damp cloth, but my downstairs neighbours are still angry. There is sort of four less than inch long marks…

Recommend a 2 year old Electric Cooker
I'm looking to buy an electric cooker from ebay. Got about £200, so was thinking of getting a nice clean 2nd hand one. I want a good grill that doesn't require me to fit a deflector before use, a smallish oven is fine as there's just the two of us. Never had an electric hob, so is there anything i need to watch out for.

Pricing DIY jobs before house purchase
Hi, I'm looking for a little advice. FTB and I've found a house that I love. Its non standard construction (steel built) but from a little research it looks like the bank i've got the appointment with will lend on it (fingers crossed) Anyway, the home report shows that the house has asbestos soffits. The guttering needs…
