Creaking / Squeaky Floorboards

We are today decorating our spare room to change into a nursery and in parts of the room the floor boards are squeaky.

Out of interest I have just pulled up my carpets to nail down some floorboards to try and eradicate the squeaking and noticed a series of scribbles over a few sections of the floorboards in pencil - is this the kind of thing a builder would have done so that no one drills in this section due to pipes etc?

I do happen to the think its because of the gap between the skirting board and the floor - so I am thinking of putting some small wooden wedges in the gaps and hope this helps. In the whole bedroom and bathroom (they are adjoining) the only part of the room that squeaks in the either is the section along the adjoining wall. So I assume this is the culprit as putting more nails/screws next to the existing nails did nothing and neither did the old talcum powder trick.

Is there a particular type of wood I would be best off using? I want to lay the carpet back over so it would need to be discreet.

Any help / advice would be appreciated.

How big is the gap between the floor and the skirts? It sounds like what is happening is the boards are loose. You should be able to tell which ones by walking on them.

Locate the joists and put some screws in - but not in the same location as the original ones.

Underlay should cover the gap between the boards and skirts.

The usual practice with plumbing and cables under floorboards is to keep the runs in the center of the boards so that it is safe to secure the boards on the edges.

I would replace the nails with screws. (A liberal application of talcum powder or french chalk might help.)
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
