Exterior oak doors
We have oak doors and window frames on our 9 month old extension. They were varnished several times before and just after installation but are in direct sunlight and are now showing very obvious signs of weathering. What's the best treatment? Since they've been varnished I assume that's the way to go. What type of varnish…

Yet another Boiler Question
Sorry about this, but shouldn't take long - we're going to replace our 12 year old 'Halstead Finest Gold' combi boiler, do we HAVE to have a condensor boiler now? It would mean a major job and we're both pensioners and could really do without all the hassle! Thankyou

Hi All, I'm not sure where I can post this dilemna. If it's the wrong place please can someone move it. buildings maintenance and mice
Hi all I found a mouse in my kitchen and freaked out ( i have a significant phobia of all rodents). I've had rentokil out twice- but they said the problem is light (ie. maybe just one got in) and due to a large hole (too big for normal gap fillers) in the kitchen floor where the communal water pipes runs through. I'm on…

Cooker circuit dilema
OK, this is a bit "after the event" but I could do with some advice. A couple of months ago we bought a new cooker as old one went faulty. Old cooker was Gas hobs and electric oven using a 13A plug. New cooker is all electric and rated at 9.6kW so I guessed that I needed a new circuit as old cooker circuit was utilised…

Are all dishwasher inlet hoses the same?
We've broken the cold-fill inlet hose on our office dishwasher (!). I found this: http://www.screwfix.com/p/comap-washing-machine-inlet-hose-blue/12496 However, the link above says 3/4" connector. The diameter of the inlet on our dishwasher and the old screw connector is 1" so it doesn't sound like the one above would fit.…

Updating 20yr old boiler + installing D glazing how much could I save on gas?
Hi I am just about to be made redundant and I have spent ages looking for the best place to invest my lump sum so that it would make an income for me. It is gradually dawning on me that, if I was to update the old Concord WRS boiler and some of the old radiators, and replace the alluminium double glazing (even if it's only…

My neighbour's house is crumbling
Greetings, we own and live in a Victorian terrace property that is generally in good condition and well maintained. However, our neighbour's property is quite the opposite. In fact, in January a large part of his gutter collapsed and now water streams down the brickwork whenever it rains. A friend suggested that it would…

Immersion heater bust
The immersion heater just stopped heating the tank. One day it did, next day it didn't. I've checked all wiring and the fault must be the heater (why don't they have a little red light or something to to show when they come on....) Might it be the thermostat and can these be changed? If it's the heater element, how easy is…
