cheap conservatories?
Hi, we were considering moving home soon as our house is feeling a little too small at the moment. Unfortunately, as with most areas, house prices here are at a ridiculous level (who the hell buys them?) so we have decided to stay where we are for a couple more years. Anyway, to increase the size of our property, I am…

Heating a house on junk mail?
Hello, What a brilliant forum you have here; so many topics and so many people. :-) Anyways ..I was wondering about how practical it would be to heat your house using junk mail. We have this friend over in Norfolk who has this all-fuel-burner thing on the side of his farmhouse into which he throws literally anything he can…

Ecomonic way of heating a room
I am working in a 3rd bedroom at home and don't really want to turn heating on to heat whole house all day everyday as it seems to get warm everywhere before the room I'm working in. Does anyone know the most economic heater type, i.e. oil filled radiator, fan heater etc? The room is about 3 m squared and the heater could…

Bearings gone on my 18 month old washing machine
I have been told it will cost £80 to repair it as it's Tricity Bendix (meant to be harder to repair) & it only cost about £150 so I don't know if it's worth it. Any thoughts? Thanks, Nickinoo

Alternatives to Barbed Wire
We have a shared drive which has a side arched iron gated to our property, the standard type with the metal curls pattern. Recently I have noticed that a couple of the curls have been squashed as in someone has climbed over it. I can't see any attempts at our back door, but I am worried about this weak spot. I have already…

Plumbing leak discoverd 6 months after new bathroom fitted - whose responsibility?
We bought our house 6 months ago and had the bathroom refitted before moving in. Since then I've always noticed a bit of a damp smell in there but assumed it was just airing a bit after the previous 35 yr old bathroom was removed. A few months ago I also noticed a few brown spots in the coving in the living room directly…

Help needed on Broken Tap
The hot tap on our bath has broken - the tap came off in my hand and there seems to be a screw that has sheared in half, meaning I can't turn the water off. I've managed to almost stop the water running as it seems that the water runs when part of the tap (sorry can't me more technical than that!!) is pulled out and stops…

I think the washing machine is about to break
Trying to avoid getting out a repair man for the machine. I used it today and noticed after the wash the drum was making a grating noise, similar to a coin being stuck somewhere. Bf checked the filter and only water came out of there. He took off the back panal and fiddled with the motor, he suspects the noise maybe the…

Low energy bulbs - screw fitting
Can you get low energy light bulbs with a screw fitting ( rather than a bayonet?) We have two lights in a skylight above the stairs and as the lights are left on a lot it would save money + energy if we could use low energy ones, but we can't find any that go in the fitting. Alternatively, is there a simple way to convert…
