question re energy saving light bulbs - savings?

I just bought 4 energy saving light bulbs and wondered whether it would be better to leave them on (like you do with flourescent lights) or better to turn them off and on when needed?

    Hello Tiat

    Welcome to the MSE site.

We have one energy saving lightbulb which is left on until bedtime because it lights a dark hall and landing area. We have others which are only turned on when we're using that room, otherwise they're turned off.

So...........I believe that it's best to only have them on when they're needed.

    Kind Regards

    Hi
I second that, however if you are going to go back into a room within say 15 mins, don't bother to turn the light of, turning lights on and off can shorten their lifespan.

This is an Old Wifes Tale, in the past when energy saving lights had "proper ballasts" and weighed a ton it was arguable as to whether or not you left them on, but, the modern bulbs have all electronic ballasts and it is fine to turn them on and off as needed. It what they are designed for. The old story about them using loads of electrickery to start up is tosh.

    Hope this helps
