Moving Home
Hello All I've just been offered a council property and get the keys on Friday. The thing I'm wondering at the moment is that the fuel is on a prepayment meter with SSE. I am living with parents at the moment so I dont have a fuel provider. How easy will it be to have the meters taken out and do I have to stay with SSE to…

I’m really sorry if these seems a stupid question I’ve moved into my own property which has gas and electric set up as direct debit. British gas units/tarrif and Central heating controls.
First question I am on standard tarrif, do the cost of units always work out the same. Example from last bill, 4 units used = cost £2.04. That was 44.76 kwh x 4.560p So working that out in my mind 8 units a day = £4.08p. If thats the wrong way it works please tell me. Also which of the cental heating controls has the…

I am having massive issues with Scottish power for my gas. I have had a prepayment meter with them for 8 years or so. There has NEVER been a time when I have topped up my meter that it hasn't taken a large percentage of that top up for debt!? I recently tried to leave Scottish power and go with OVO which acottish power…

Should it be quicker?
At last, I listened to MSE Martin's message to switch providers and used the MSE Energy Club. I have projected savings of over £400. So pleased, but just heard from my gas supplier that it will initiate the cross over 46 days after my request (and I used e-mail to speed things up which I don't usually do). Still haven't…

External Wall insulation - Be aware of the risks
Having seen the news this morning that more money is available from the government for external wall insulation, I thought I would share my research on the subject. Last year I applied and got £6500 reserved towards such work. Final quotes for the work came in at £17k , so I would have to find £10,500 towards it. Having a…

Living without heating
Im trying an experiment this winter & not turning the central heating or gas fire on - Im not cash strapped, just frugal by nature As a caveat I suspect I can only really do this as I live alone & don't have other family members to be worried about So far Ive been perfectly comfortable by just a) putting on extra layers of…

Energy Company Rip Off
I have a dispute with an Energy company, after getting weird bills that did not match my usage, I requested they do a check. They said they would put in a check meter but when the engineer came he found a faulty timer switch and refused to put a check meter in. I felt this was important because it would show that both the…

I'm with scottish power and whenever I have my heating on overnight by the time I wake up the gas has ran out. The house is absolutely freezing, I've had every radiator bled and serviced and I only ever put my heating on half. A question regarding U-values
Hi, We are going to be building a new extension next year, and are going down the route of eco home, with the aim of getting as near to passivhaus as possible. Obviously triple glazed seems to be the way to go, but getting such low passivhaus u-values seems near on impossible in the UK (Passivhaus requires 0.8U, best I've…

Prevent pipes freezing in unoccupied house - turn water off or boiler on?
Hi My mum has just bought a house but it needs damp-proofing before she can move in, in January. All the downstairs radiators have been moved in preparation for the dpc. Due to the very cold weather on its way, she is unsure on what to do to prevent pipes freezing and has had conflicting advice. 1. Should she keep boiler…

Clueless on storage heaters!
I'm hoping someone has good knowledge on storage heaters!! Me and my fianc! moved into a 2bedroom semi detached property in August. As the winter months have come we've realised just how cold it is. We have 2 storage heaters, 1 on the landing upstairs which seems to keep upstairs warm enough until bed time. And another…

Is it right that vat is charged on budget plan amount rather than actual usage?
I have realised that my provider is applying the 5% VAT on my monthly budget plan amount rather than my actual usage. I have worked out that over the last 4 months the amount of VAT on usage would be £8.62, whereas I have been charged £16.20. Best of it is I am in credit. Can companies do this as I am rather shocked and…
