Proms. What's all that about ?

DD prom coming up for end of GCSES. I think we've done quite well relatively speaking.
Dress £60 (DD assures me that's a bargain)
£18 for getting it shortened (one of those slippy lined type material ones)
£16.99 shoes with heels the height of the Eiffel Tower (will stay on 5 mins)
Strapless, backless, stick on bra £19
Wash in hair colour 6.99
But, some of the things going on (not my DD I stress)
Limousines
£300 dresses (yes, that's not a typo)
Ted baker handbags
Designer accessories
Hair extensions (proper expensive ones)
Professional hair and make up on the day.
That's just the girls.
Apparently its like this in most schools. Then they do it again at 18.
That's a lot of paper rounds these kids must be doing!

My daughter has prom in 2 weeks. I consider myself quite lucky what I have paid:
£50 dress reduced from £320 in the local 'prom dress' store
£20 hair on the day
£25 towards the car her and her friends have hired
A family friend has paid £25 for my DD to have her make up done on the day (inc a trial beforehand)
My daughter is paying for herself to have her nails done, eyesbrows waxed, bought her prom shoes and bought a sparkly clip thing to go in her hair.0 -
It seems to be becoming the norm over here in the UK now - imported from the USA.....and now - I'm giving you fair warning of what happens when students "graduate/leave school at 18.
As my DD says, over here in the UK, you signed everybody's shirt, you might indulge in a bit of "egg play" if you were daring - but that was it! In the USA, families organise HUUUGE parties, with grandparents, aunts, uncles, godparents all turning up with pressies for the person who has graduated! Here in the UK, we turned up for the Graduation ceremonies when they got their degrees, paid for the graduation pictures, and paid for dinner! Over there, it's a good job that Nanny 2 had already decided that she is visiting now, or DGS would be very short of a family party! :-D0 -

That sounds reasonable too. I'm hoping to sell the dress on ebay afterwards although I think a heel might go through it. Next option is to get it shortened into a mini for her.

When I left school we tipped all the bins over and did a runner. Happy days. It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0

Im hoping to sell my daughters as well (if she lets me!), maybe for a profit haha! It cant be shortened due to it being quite 'meringue' like. My daughters heels may turn into converse as 8 days ago she tore some ankle ligaments in a sporting accident and is currently on crutches. She is determined she will be wearing heels but I doubt very much she will be!0 -

With backless dresses you need something that doesn't show the straps. There is very little point.:) it's not at all about being useful or practical.Never again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0 -
