Stop Smoking 2014 Diary

Hi everyone

I am trying to stop smoking and can't see any up running diary for this year.

Apart from the benefits to health on stopping smoking I am also looking forward to the money I will save too.

I am at the early stages of stopping and my last cigarette was on Tuesday night, I am feeling determined this time.

I have read the diary by Sue-uu and found it very inspiring.

Has anyone else recently tried to stop smoking?

Thanks Debbie

Hey, just came across your diary and I am also trying to give up smoking. I have tried a few times before, but I am using Champix tablets they seem to work the best for me as they seem to kill the desire of having one.

I am also feeling very determined this time, as I am afraid of getting to a point where I have a smoking related illness that cant be undone. The money factor of course is also huge, I smoked 20 per day most days, so was spending £7 odd a day, sometimes more when I was out drinking/socialising.

The thing I seem to really struggle with is that a lot of my friends smoke, and I find it difficult to avoid temptation when they offer me one or ask me if I am going outside for one too. Any tips on how to get past this?

    Hi Laurag89

Thanks for posting. I am using patches as will power on it's own was not enough. Good luck with your stop smoking and please keep posting and let me know how you are doing.

I was smoking roughly the same amount as yourself and tried a few months back but I am determined this time to hopefully quit for good.

Have you asked your friends to support you and no matter how much you feel like a cigarette to try and avoid giving you one as you feel determined to give up.

only one of my friends smoke and the other who used to smoke has given up now for 2 months. My partner smokes and is being supportive as much as he can.

I hope your friends give you the support you need.

Late last night I was feeling a bit twitchy so decided to post on here. I still haven't had one so feeling pleased with myself. Hope I keep it up

Good on you for having the determination to quite this time, I'm feeling exactly the same. With Champix tablets you lose all desire to even want to smoke, the only downside is straight after you have taken the tablet you feel sick straight after for a little while.

My friends are good in the fact they don't offer me one when they know I have stopped its just the difficult bit for me standing outside with them or knowing they are outside smoking.... seems silly I know.

I just cant keep on smoking when its so expensive, and it has no benefits what so ever. I have downloaded an app for my i phone that tells you how your health is improving, hows many you will have smoked and how much you have saved, which helps!

    Good luck with it x

On the same tablets and had to have a lower dosage as i was unbelievably unwell. Have not cut down the desire to smoke though, not sure whats happening there.

    Hi Laurag89

That is a difficult one when all your friends smoke, maybe having a list of the benefits of stopping smoking on your phone or on a piece of paper to read when your friends are out having a cigarette might help. Or looking at the app on your phone. I hope you do well with this.

I must have a look for this app it sounds good.

Sax11 have you tried the chemist? they have a selection of different things to help from patches to lozengers. I went to the chemist on Friday I signed up for a programme and I go back in a week and they give you something free to try. Do any chemists near you run any programmes like this?
  • Hi everyone :)

Just wanted to wish you luck and say .... it is soooooo worth it :)

Stick at it - no matter how hard things get ..... if there's a major crisis or something like that when you really want a ciggie .... think ..... is having that ciggie really going to solve the problem?

    NO!

I'm not going to lie and say it's easy (because it's not!) and there will be times when it will be really, really hard to say no ..... but do!

You'll feel loads better - for me it was more health related (I smoked rollies so didn't have the huge amount of savings that some people do) BUT so, so pleased I've (touch wood) cracked it this time!

    Best of luck ....

    Thanks for all the support!

Sax11 how long have you been on the tablets? It does take time for them to fully get into your system and you are supposed to smoke still when you first start taking them as the champix tablets destroy the part of your brain that craves/wants to smoke. That's my understanding. I don't know if you have tried going to the stop smoking local service you go once a week and I found that helps.

Thanks debs 2009 that's a brilliant idea!!! I will give it a try. I went to the gym earlier and as I opened my locker afterwards all I could smell was stale smoke it was vile!!!!

Thank you! Did you find anything else helped when you had really strong feeling that you wanted to have one? I struggle with my determination.... And easily think "ahhh well I will just have one and quit another time" but that's how I used to be!

    Not this time!

I really just tried to remind myself that having one wouldn't actually solve the problem .... and that really once the first few days are over it's the habit rather than the need (as all the nasty stuff goes out your body pretty quickly) ...... and I wouldn't feel any better once I'd had it as I'd then be p#d off that I'd had one!
