Christmas Job Hunt 2010

Hi,
I know it is still a long time until Christmas but I know that a lot of people are looking jobs at the moment and the run up to Christmas is certainly a good time to look.

I just wondered how people felt about compiling a thread saying which companies were recruiting/any experiences with the companies or assessments or anything else which could help job-hunters in the next few months.

So far, I have come across the following companies recruiting:

1. September 2010 - Boots.com (http://www.boots.jobs/w/christmas/) - online application
2. September 2010 - Argos
3. September 2010 - O2 (http://o2careers.co.uk/business_areas/retail/sales_advisor.php)

  • A friend of mine works for Argos and they are ALWAYS after temp Xmas Staff. No details to hand, but I'm sure they're not that hard to find. They pay above NMW too.

There is a thread here regarding Argos Christmas vacancies. My son has just been successful in his application to Argos for Christmas.

Thanks for that. I haven't been on the forum for a while and it keeps not letting me post, but I'll try to edit the top list.

Also, O2 have some Christmas jobs:

The Guardian is reporting some bad news on this:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/sep/09/argos-cold-christmas-prediction-viewpoint

"A couple of years ago, Argos hired 20,000 temporary staff. Last year, the figure was 12,000 staff working 12 hours a week on average. This year, it will recruit 7,000 workers doing 5% fewer hours."

Christmas temp jobs used to be so easy to get and gave a boost for Christmas plus something to put on the CV or even a permanent job. If the trend at Argos is repeated throughout the industry and recruitment levels are down over 50% from 2 years ago it is going to be a very poor Christmas for many.

Around my area the big difference this year in the supermarkets is self service tills, I think they are going to be taking up a lot of the demand instead of Christmas temps.

they will still need staff to fill the shelves during the day(due to the mad panic buying) and at night(due to increased volumes of stock needed to replenish the shelves due to being emptied during the day)

Absolutely, and I've seen a fair few Christmas jobs around...in fact it is relatively late in the season for Christmas temp recruitment now, many companies interview now with delayed starts so they aren't recruiting when it is busy. I did notice last year where I worked that they took on less temps and started them later in the year and then kept less on as permanent afterwards, a trend I expect will be repeated across the board.
  • toys r us are after xmas temps but its worth noting that the application form mentions court appearances, and that they will do credit reference, NI contribution and electoral rolls checks.
