I did read your posts, and they've been trying things. They tried the volume button, but nothing is working. They tried turning wifi off and going to settings, but whatever they press, nothing happens. Those ba*t*rds win, whether you pay them or not! Unless he pays now to get it sorted, his tablet's been rendered useless. When he brings the keyboard up, there are no keys on there, just a box to pay them.

Thanks anyway, for trying to help.

It's easy to mistime the order you have to press things to get into recovery mode.

This is the way for volume down + power:

Once the tablet is off, press and hold down the volume down rocker. With volume down still pressed press and hold the power button for a second. Let go of the power button, keeping the volume down rocker pressed in, wait a couple of seconds then let go of the volume down rocker.

Wait a couple of seconds and you should be in recovery mode.

If all else fails, try this It will work.

Spoiler Alert: Go directly to 3:15 on the video :)

As an aside, this firmware fix from earlier this year?

No it will not "go away" if you leave the device off lol !!

It is simply a rogue app that is set to start as a full screen overlay when you turn on the device.
Start your tablet in safe mode, google for easy instructions how to do this for your specific model.

Then simply uninstall the app that is causing this issue. Tip : it will be the last one that he installed.

If he cant remember which one he installed last, just look for apps that you don't recognise as being required by you, and uninstall them.

Problem solved - restart the device normally and all will be ok.

Moving forward, this could never have happened had he not ticked the box in settings that says "allow installation from unknown sources".

He would have been warned when he ticked it that this was an unsafe action.

Go back into settings, UN-tick this box - and something like this wont happen again.
