I hope you dont mind me posting here but was looking for abit of advice... After seeing so many lovely things you ladies make ive wanted to start sewing and my OH is going to buy me a machine for christmas (Yay)
But i have no idea where to start, there are loads of machines around! He has a budget of about £150 and was hoping you ladies could recomend me one. Also if there are any books about that you know of for sewing for beginners!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated xx
If you are able find a machine shop and try a couple of machines to get a feel of which make you feel most comfortable with. If this isn't possible then have a look here for an idea of your choices in your price range

I bought my machine from them 18 months ago and am happy to recommend them. Phone first and they will be happy to help you choose the right machine for your needs. They were recommended to me by the members of 'the sewing forum' and I'd definitely buy another machine from them in the future.
The free gift is fantastic and contains all things you will have to go out and buy anyway.
Let us know what you decide to do.0 -
Newbielou, you can get stretch lace but then you would need something else underneath. I think your best bet is jersey.
Genieuk, loving the doorstops and the bag.
Pennib, Miss Rose is so cute and I love her little bag!0 -
I honestly dont know, the lady has put in her description that she used really stretchy fabric,
Sorry I must have missed her saying that. It just looks like quite a normal dress which wouldn't necessarily need to be stretchy. You could make a toile out of a duvet cover I suppose to see how it goes.0 -
genie Uk love your makes. Tea towels are sooo adaptable they seem to be used for
everything except drying china!!0 -

I think I have been underselling my stuff! I may have to rethink my pricing!
I was given some old suede scraps yesterday, by my neighbour, not sure what they had it for, but I cut out an elephant yesterday, to use to applique onto a cushion. If I can do it? Its quite thick fabric.
Still feeling in a creative mood, yesterday was a good spurt, but DGD was in nursery then. I am not sure she will give me peace to sew today, but as the machine is still down here in the sitting room I am going ot try.!When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Mooloo; have you tried giving her, her own piece of material (or kids aida) with a blunt plastic
needle and a piece of wool, so she can sew along with granny......mine used to like that sort of thing....and you never know she might turn into a talented seamstress like granny!0 -
Just a quick thank you to whoever suggested using Cat Litter in my doorstops.
Got a 10KG bag for £1.69 and have filled two pyramid doorstops and 9 chickens for pincushions, paperweights etc - hardly made a hole in the bag, and perfect weight. Far cheaper than rice or peas and won't attract vermin!!!Jack of all trades ... Master of none
