Money Moral Dilemma: Should we ask the cleaner to pay for a new vacuum?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...

Last week our cleaner broke our vacuum. It's hard to tell exactly how it happened, but it wasn't that old and seemed in good shape. Would it be wrong to ask her to pay for a new one, or should we all just chip in ourselves?

  • I am digusted that you are even thinking about charging someone else for your goods. I have done many cleaning jobs over the years and had to use whatever tools were provided. Quite often the employer would have no idea about what the best quality tools were and provide you with cheap tools that would easily break.

I don't believe people like you actually exist.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.

Ask her to pay for a new one? Don't take the Mick!!!

If it's not that old go and find your receipt and check when the guarantee expires. If not buy a new one yourself.
  • Would you be expected to pay for a company vehicle if it broke down?
  • If you can afford a cleaner(probably paid a low rate!) then surely you can afford a new vacuum?

They don't. It's probably another made up MSE special.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • I am a cleaner and recently while I was cleaning a shaving mirror it broke where the wall attachment was rusty and degraded. We were asked if our insurance covered this and if not to replace it (all £5.99 of it) we replaced it out of our own pocket as insurance excess too much and it was in our opinion due to degradation of material due to rust and age. We didn't quibble as we need to keep the job really. (Well paid young couples house) but we are peeved!

Last week the Rolls Royce broke down while the chauffeur was behind the wheel. Do I charge him for a new one?
  • You can afford a cleaner. You can afford to buy a new vacuum cleaner. It's hard to believe anybody would seriously ask such a question.
