I take you are a doctor, a dietologist or suitably qualified practitioner qualified to give specialised nutrional advice to people with specific medical conditions, on the basis of a couple of sentences posted on a thread (a mind reader as well then?.
For the record yes, and diabetes is a condition that is routinely treated in the community so as not to warrant specialist medical advice. There's no great mystery to it, generic advice is suitable for all but the most extreme cases of diabetes, as well as the general population.

Quick question for regulars on this thread - what do people think of Stevia? Is there a discernable taste difference from sugar? What is the sweetness ratio to sugar? I'd like to add it to my storecupboard if other posters have had good experiences with it (I tend to have sugar handy for baking / cooking only). And of course the bargain factor - any offers anywhere?

    TIA

Aldi do ground Almonds at the moment If I remember right its about 1.99 for 200g, which compared with other supermarkets is cheap.

I have a fantastic microwave sponge type pudding recipe using ground almonds instead of flour I tend to add a few blueberries to the mix as well.

    25g ground almonds
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    pinch of salt
    3 teaspoons of Splenda
    1 large egg
    1 tablespoon of butter
    1 tablespoon double cream
a few drops of vanilla essence

    Method:

Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl. Melt the butter in a pyrex jug, add the egg, cream and essence mix, then add the dry ingredients and mix. Microwave at 700 watt for 1 minute 20 seconds.

There are a lot of grate low carb recipes over on the diabetes uk forum.

(had to edit to remove the www bit as it wont let me post links)

    Hello VfM.. :D

Yes, you're a doctor ? Then all you're allowed to do under your NHS contract in real life is repeat the low fat message, because anything else would be going against NHS policy and you could get fired.

I refute the idea that diabetes isn't serious, as I have Type 2 diabetes and sight-threatening maculopathy. :(

Diabetes can result in all sorts of complications and people are going blind, having limbs amputated, getting heart, kidney and liver problems etc. For the majority of people, being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes is a one way route to ill-health.

Had I been told that low carb would improve my health upon diagnosis, I wouldn't have the maculopathy. Having it really peeves me off no end, because once I had discovered low carb by myself, my HbA1c dropped 6% in the first three months.

I now have normal BG, normal BP, excellent cholesterol, normal kidney function and no more anaemia. I've lost four inches off my waist and dropped a size since December and my GP has allowed me to drop two drugs.

HCPs now ask me whether I'm a Type 1 or tell me I don't look fat enough to have diabetes. They beam when I tell them my HbA1c but I feel like adding not by the drugs and advice pushed at me by the NHS - I achieved it by my own hard work.

The NHS and Diabetes UK both refuse to advocate a low carb diet, despite all the studies. Yet I notice that the 63 stone teenager with diabetes has been put on a sugar free diet.

The NHS and other healthcare providers around the world have used low carb diets to treat children with epilepsy and people with Crohn's disease. Yet the people with diabetes who would most benefit from a low carb diet get told to eat porridge.

The national diabetes charity Diabetes UK also spouts the eat starchy carbs message - corporate sponsors include numerous drug companies as well as Kellogg's and Shredded Wheat - you can look them up on www.diabetes.org,uk although they aren't easy to find.

Before oral meds, Type Twos were put on no sugar-no starch diets as a first line treatment these days we get told to eat starchy carbs and stuff meds. :(

Re: the Stevia, it's several hundred times sweeter than sugar. You'll find a discussion on it in the Low carb diet support thread in Health and Beauty Moneysaving in the Moneysaving in Relationships section.

durham_mim you'd be most welcome to drop in on the thread we've got quite a few newbies there at the moment. The welcome goes for you too lexibum and Sparkly fairy xx and yes VfM if you promise not to give us the low fat mantra you'd be welcome to drop in as well :)

I haven't updated bargains on this thread as I now have a blog and do it all on there.

If anyone feels like posting low carb bargains up, feel free, that would be great !

I decided to try the 50/50 sugar/stevia mix (green and white packet, from Tate & Lyle I think?)

    Gross.
You apparently use half the amount to replace sugar, but it has that chemically/astringent/bitter aftertaste that I find with other artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.

    Save your money :(

    Stevia is awful, really bitter.

Xylitol is the best I have found.
