I received a Cafe Direct campaign pack, to promote awareness of Fair Trade tea, coffee and cocoa. My husband is using it to take to work and give out the samples, we did keep some though to try ourselves
During the winter and when camping my children like hot chocolate before bedtime and I usually buy Cadburys Instant Hot chocolate where you just add water. Last night we tried the Coco Direct one which was absolutely gorgeous (you add warm milk to the powder). Totally different to the one I usually buy. I'm always concerned about how much sugar/salt/fat we use, so wondered if I buy cocoa powder and add milk, would that be similar to the instant hot drink I usually buy? If so its a lot cheaper and I would imagine a lot less sugar.

The difference is that cocoa is exactly what it says on the tin - dried cocoa. Hot chocolate is nearly 75% sugar!!
And I quote from my Tesco's hot chocolate drink ingredients:
Sugar, Cocoa, Salt, Flavourings.
Cocoa solids 25% minimum.
When I bake, I used cocoa and I only drink hot choccy rarely. You could obviously make your own, but you will need to add a lot of sugar to get it to taste anything like what you are used to. It will take some weaning off, esp. if you're a sugar addict/small child.:D0 -
Cocodirect is 40% cocoa which explains the better flavour. It doesnt taste as sweet as Cadburys instant hot choc, which I prefer. Its more expensive though but probably worth having as they drink it most nights before bed, not a good time to have so much sugar. When I posted originally I thought Cocodirect was cocoa, but it is drinking chocolate.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

I keep having to resist my local Poundland as when I went in at the beginning of the week they had a mountain of jars of Galaxy Instant Hot Chocoolate, I nearly camped on their floorOrganised people are just too lazy to look for things

Are there any sugar-free (including sweetener free) hot chocolate drinks? I usually stick to cocoa, make with milk and don't add sugar, as I can't stand any of the chocolate drinks I have tried, they are all far too sweet. If any of you know any different though, will be pleased to hear.0

Hi, I like hot chocolate in the morning before a cup of tea and sometimes in the evening. I used to get the Cadbury instant, but when scraping pennies bought Freshers Instant Hot Chocolate Flavour Drink, and I love it. Much nicer than Cadburys in my opinion and cost 99p for 400g. Hope that helps!0

Like Ticklemouse, I use cocoa powder for cooking and Asda/Tesco hot chocolate powder to add to milk for hot chocolate. It is high in sugar but we only have it occasionally - when we comein from the cold in the winter or when someone's feeling fragile! I don't really care about the sugar/fat content of things we have now and then, it's the everyday things that matter to me. I would NEVER use the instant types though because they're just rubbish IMHO, whereas at least you get the goodness of milk when you make it with the other stuff. I like the idea of the fair trade one and will look out for it. I occasionally shop at Sainsburys and prefer their hot choc but my kids don't like it - not sweet enough, they say.0

I always make hot chocolate with milk, even the ones you're supposed to only add water. It tastes so much nicer that way. But the CocoaDirect hot chocolate is the nicest drink ever!Murphy's No More Pies Club #209

Do it like this, as they do in Bulgaria...
mug of hot milk, a few squares of chocolate - you could use the high cocoa content stuff to cut down on sugar, then shove it in a blender.
It is absolutely delicious, and is served with optional cream on top, and a (large) shot of brandy:)Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

Friend of mine used to chop up a Mars bar put in a mug and add hot water, stir until melted. She never used to drink any other chocolate drink!Mink0
